How long did it take to get your USMLE step 3 results back? My last screen on the exam said 6 weeks! Did yours come sooner?

I think it's similar to the other steps, 6 weeks is an estimate but if you took it at a busy time (like may-june probably) it might take longer.

It's probably their way of holding down the cost of the test. 🙄

Slightly different question for you two. When you sign up for step 3, how long does it take for the FSMB to mail you your scheduling permit (i.e., what's the ballpark figure on how soon you can take it after you mail your application to the FSMB?). I ask since I have a suspicion, based on an email I received not too long ago, that my first few months will not be surgical pathology months so I will have time to study a little here and there. I will most likely try to schedule my exam for my first week-long vacation.

It took awhile for me. I got an email notification that my application was complete about 3 weeks after I sent in my last stuff. And then, about a week later I got my permit in the mail. I guess give it about a month. It takes a few days though to get everything organized though when you start - you have to apply, and then get a form notarized, one signed by your PD, etc. You then have three months in which to take it, and you can get an extension probably without too much trouble. So if you think you will be taking it in the next three months, might as well apply ASAP.

andy, i've heard it takes 2 weeks to get the infamous "orange registration ticket" from others that registered (online...i guess you can by papermail, but who the does that?).
It took me 3-4 weeks though...my school's fault completely. I signed up the day after graduation, expecting that 2 week window, and waited, and waited...
finally called AGAIN, and found that that my school hasn't sent the nbme the 'official list of graduates' (fsmb uses nbme as outsource for verification -- really odd all this hoopla, i wish fsmb would just do it directly), and so fsmb can't verify that i graduated. and of course no, they wouldn't take a copy of my diploma that i could SOOO easily just fax to them. I got on my registrar to send 'the list' to nbme, waited yet again, and after a week got the okay from fsmb --- THEN, they tell me they'll be mailing the orange ticket out in 5 business days...ahhh!! of course, i got it 7 days later.
so all in all, make sure you're on top of your file, registrar, fsmb...

ps, since i had to wait an extra 2 weeks from my antipicated date, and later realizing how freaking busy JUNE is for step 1's/2's...i had to fly to freaking Arizona (from missouri) b/c of lack of avail. to take step 3 which i did last week...i know i know, crazy, but it's worth it getting it out of the way BEFORE residency...(plus, got family in AZ so no car, hotel, etc costs). but you'll be fine scheduling in a non-JUNE month.

gl, :luck: and trust me, it feels good to be STEP-free.

Thanks yaah and SLUsagar.

SLU, you're telling me that I gotta deal with my med school again? This is the same med school that took months to send all the info the Mass Licensing Board needed to review my application for licensure. They only got off their asses after I went to the med school office in person and told them how urgent this was. I'm not dealing with them again. Knowing my med school, I'm certain they haven't sent out the list of graduates to the NBME.

Screw it. I was gonna read through my Step 3 review book during this and next week before orientation. But now, I'm putting it away. I'll live this fight this another day. I'm sure I'll pass...I don't care if it's barely passing either (I don't care about beating yaah anymore  ... in fact, based on our comparative scoring trend on step 1 and 2, I predict that I will score approx. 20 points lower than yaah on the three-digit score. So yaah, please get at least a 210 or higher. I'm rootin' for ya!)

Congrats on finishing Step 3 though. You must feel great that you have this piece of crap exam off your shoulders.

Cheers. I hope your moving into the Bay Area is going smoothly. Enjoy residency!

You can register online, but you still have to use mail to send in some things - like a notarized picture of you. And of course there is all the $$$. All these stupid organizations are so annoying - they force everyone to do all this extra crap. Everyone has to apply to have NBME send FSMB their scores, or whatever the organizations are. EVERYONE. So make a ****ing policy that automatically does it, you idiots!

Yup I became aware of this late last night when I was on the FSMB website yesterday.

I don't feel like dealing with this now. 👎

My Step 3 scores took 8 1/2 weeks to arrive, and I took the test in mid-April (I still can't believe I passed - the simulated cases seemed really difficult). I think it was about 2 weeks from the time I mailed everything to when I received the orange permit. I didn't think registering was really too much of a hassle - you do have to get a photo taken and notarized, but that's no different from the other steps.

Cool beans. Hats off to you for passing. I'm glad the CCS part of Step 3 only accounts for 25% of your score. That part is gonna kick my ass and make me scream, "No mas!"

Two weeks to get the orange permit is pretty short/efficient...your 3 month scheduling window starts from the day you get the permit, right? I understand that you basically need two days off to take this exam. I guess I'll have to wait until my first vacation (which probably won't be for several months) to take it so I'm not gonna be itchin' to send the application in anytime soon. At least I can print out the application and have it notarized while I have the time. The notarized document is apparently good for quite some time.

Thanks for the info! 🙂
