Hey guys, I am starting to get serious about getting a dedicated study schedule, and I was wondering how long it takes to get through RR Path if you've never cracked it open (assume I'm pretty strong in path)

Took me about a month and a half to read cover-to-cover, but that was with reading other Kaplan books at the same time. And a lot mucking about the internet for about 15 minutes at a time in between each page. System-based learning isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

I can forsee being able to read the book fully cover-to-cover with no other books in between in about a week. I plan to go through the book once again fully (not reading other books) with the accompanying audio, and then once through again with no audio. If time permits, maybe one more read-through with the audio.

You can see that the audios encompass a time period of 5 days so to say that a week is doable isn't really a stretch at all.

I'm giving myself 5 days to read it. For me though, I've read a lot of it before, and there are a few sections I may skip because they are fresh on my mind from class.

If I had to read and comprehend the whole thing through from scratch, it would take me 9-10 good days. That puts it at about 60pgs a day. You may be able to read/comprehend faster. I couldn't concentrate on one thing long enough to do more than that.

I have been reading RR path all year long along with classes, and I have to say, I think you will have a very tough time if you have never opened it before. Honestly, getting through it in 7 days is going be a huge challenge for me, even though I have read through every chapter at least twice. I mean, I guess you could "get through it" in a reasonable amount of time, but I the point is to master the material, not read through pages.

Anyways, If I were in your situation, I would definitely use BRS. In fact...I may still end up using BRS towards the end of my prep because it is so much shorter and more manageable.

:luck: What do you guys think of 1 month dedicated to RR Path?...I obviously have a lot of time available, and since I haven't read it before, I think it will suffice. The USMLEWorld's questions for each system are included in that time frame. Also, I have managed to go through anatomy, histo, pharm and micro, and I was thinking revising the first 2 before beginning each system and pharm at the end!Any opinions and suggestions are welcome!

P.S : Have you heard anything about HY Histopathology? Is it worth it?

if all you're going to do is RR path then you only need around 7-10 days (given your strong background in path). taking over a month to read the book will be useless because you'll forget everything you read in the beginning by the time you finish. After you get through your first run through you can easily review it again in about 3 days before your exam (skip you topics you know well and skim lower yield sections). that's what i did and aced path on the boards.

blz, what sections in RR are lower yield?

well here's my situation... I have 3.5 weeks after finals, and the 2 weeks before that are reserved for class finals (including a cumulative micro final).

The last 3.5 weeks I will barely have to review for Physio, Pharm, Micro, or Neuro. About 6 weeks out, I want to either go through RR Path, or go through things I need to review still (Anatomy, Behavioral, Biochem, Cell Bio) so that I will use mostly First Aid + massive amounts of questions for the last 3.5 weeks.

It seems to make more sense to me to save stuff like Anatomy and Biochem for 3 weeks out rather than 6 weeks out, so I am leaning towards setting aside RR Path before my finals and then hitting my weak points and blue margins after finals, relying pretty heavily on questions to keep path fresh. What do you guys think?

I mean he has some pretty useless topics he covers like insect bites and crap. usually if its not in FA, it can safely be considered pretty low yield. i read those sections on my first pass but didn't really touch them after that.

good plan. i think you'll be fine. you seem like one of the more brighter ones around here.

My exam is this Friday.

I read RR path straight through starting about 3 weeks ago, and it took me 8 days. I read some other resources in the meantime and did exam questions too, but I'd say I was spending about 80-90% of my time with RR. I took roughly 50 pages of notes going through to help me remember the nitty gritty. I just went through my notes and re-read RR path in two days (Tuesday and Wednesday). I feel very confident about Path now, but it's a killer pace (the 2-day review, that is). We'll see how I feel on Friday!

What about with someone in a weak background in path. How long would it take to go through RR Goljan?

I guess my path is kind of middle-of-the-road. Not great and not horrible either.

And are those 7-10 days you're referring to, just path alone or are you incorporating other subjects as well?
