hey everyone. for those of you who have graduated and are working in your first "real" position, how long have you been in your job or how long did you work in your job before changing to another company or position? i just started working for a pharmacy chain about a couple months ago (won't name names) and i'm seriously thinking of leaving. it seems everyday it's high stress and i think i'm gonna get burned out soon if i change to something else. just wondering what the opinions are on changing jobs so soon. thanks

I'm sure the length of time at each job is considered by a potential employer because they have to take into consideration retention of employees. However, if you make a list of professional, reasonable reasons why you are choosing to opt for a different direction and change of career place, I would think it would be okay. Definitely be prepared to answer in the interview the question of why you are looking for a new place of work though.

I worked at my first job for 1 year, to get some experience under my belt. I did not take a signing bonus with a multi-year commitment.

I realized at about 9 months (once I was comfortable being a pharmacist), what I wanted to do as a pharmacist. My current job did not let me focus on patient care and that's what I wanted to do.

I left and am now in charge at a small pharmacy. All my OTC's are in the aisles in front of me. I always come out and talk with people in the aisles and discuss their problems and what they need. I have time to spend on the phone helping them with insurance issues, or phoning their MD to discuss a therapy change.

Anyway, I think you need to work a while and see what you want to do. I didn't have any problems with switching after a year. All my interviews went well because I told them that my current job didn't allow me to focus on patient care. Just that word "interview" shows how different some pharmacies can be. The big chains don't interview, they send you an offer letter. That shows that they just want a warm body, not a pharmacist.

I am planning a move soon. I have been with my current employer for 4 years. I do not enjoy it whatsoever. I am burnt out. It is slave labor...Im just looking for the right opportunity. Good Luck
