How long should I shadow an MD before I can ask him/her for an LOR

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long do you guys typically shadow before getting an LOR?

Shadowing is not a great way to get a doctors LOR. Volunteering will give them something substantial to talk about, rather than how good or bad you look in a dress shirt.

It really depends on what relationship you had with the doctor and his indications.

One of my letters was from a doctor I only shadowed for about 3-4 hours a day for 3 weeks or so. However, he was an anesthesiologist, so we spent most of the time discussing the case and talking about aspects of the medical field. After 2 days or so, the doctor began shaking my hand before and after I came and said "Nice working with you" when I left. He also offered to write a letter before I asked and said that I had made a good impression.

Obviously, a surgeon you stand behind (1 foot, avoid blue at all costs!!!) for infinity may acknowledge you but not have a chance to get to know you or observe how you react in a hospital setting.

My advice - pick an anesthesiology, internist, peds physician, etc. 🙂

I don't think shadowing is a good place to get a LOR. There's only so much your doctor can write about you: "he followed me closely and asked me some good questions."

hmmm. So I'm hearing that I should try to find an anesthesiologist OR get LORs from other places. My problem is I only know a few attendings in the ED. I guess I can ask them if they know any anesthesiologists?

Here is what I have so far:

1. Science prof LOR
2. 2nd Science prof LOR

where should I get my third?????

another prof? I've been volunteering for 6 months at a hospital (L&D) and I just moved to the ED, the problem is WHO the hell do you ask for an LOR? The volunteer coordinator never talks to me because they schedule and run the volunteer program, the people I talk to are nurses or staff, rarely MDs while I volunteer.

Should I just keep trying other PROFs or the MDs from shadowing? If you are saying not the shadow MDs then who?

also I met with a pre-health advisor today and she said NOT to get my LORs ready now for next year.

I send an LOR packet to a prof because the prof offered to write me an LOR unsolicited, so I figured NOW is better than a year from now since I am still fresh in her head. BUT then my advisor says to tell her to wait until next June (2010) when I am submitting my app.

Was that good advice?
