Hip Hip Hooray for the 3rd time's the charm!!!

I was just accepted on my second application cycle. Keep trying for those of you who don't get in the first time. It's even more rewarding after all those rejections letters! AND, rejection gave me the chance to get amazing vet experience and do some traveling abroad.

Just curious... do you think the people on SDN are a good representation of the entire pool of applicants? Or are we all crazed overachievers? 😀 That might change the way you interpret the poll results.

No question about it: crazed overachievers

Haha... cause you know how they drill into your brain that "most applicants don't get in on their first cycle"... but according to the poll so far, that isn't true. :eyebrow:

Nope.

Sorry guys and girls, but I'm going to have to agree with this proposal. 🙂

Are there official stats anywhere on how many application cycles the 'average' applicant goes through? I know there are for some of the med schools

I'm not saying I necessarily think SDN is representative, but I've never bought that most students don't get in on their first cycle. I believe that a significant number of students don't, but that's not the same as most.

Good point. Maybe we should stop telling our Pre-Vet Society to prepare for the worst... haha. Actually, on the first day of class in my undergrad major, the professor asked those of us who were pre-vet to raise our hands. Then, he added, "Look to your left. Now to your right. Most of those people will not get into veterinary school." Since then, everyone has had the attitude that if we were to get in, it would be fantastic, but if not, we wouldn't take it personally due to the high competitive nature of vet school admission. However, I'm glad that my friends and I have made it out on the other side of the admissions process in one piece!

If you look at the stats AAVMC posted stats (http://www.aavmc.org/students_admissions/statistics.htm), it gives the average number of applications.

***EDIT - so I'm an idiot...I just reread all of the info on that website and realized "# of Applications" probably means how many schools received the app instead of the "# of Previous Applications" - So I don't know if there is official data....

I would say that we here on SDN are a unique breed and are perhaps more prepared than some...

Plus, given the way the poll is worded - "how many application cycles you guys have gone through before your first acceptance" - you should have received your first acceptance before you can weigh in. Those who have already applied, possibly multiple times, but not yet succeeded aren't voting. AND of course, as others have suggested, SDNers might just tend to have better success than the general applicant pool. So I'm not sure we can reject the conventional "Most don't get in on their first try" wisdom based solely on this poll. That said, when I interviewed I asked some of the students I met how many times they'd had to apply, and they all said "Just once"...
