For those residents out there, how many programs did you apply to? How many interviews were you offered? I am thinking about 8 programs, just curious about your experiences. Thanks

I decided that I was only going to apply to programs in CA and NY, and namely, around LA, SF, and Manhattan. I think I used ERAS for about 12 programs. Then, I went to LA to visit family, and decided THERE IS NO WAY I WANT TO LIVE IN LA. So I turned down all the interviews. I interviewed at 4 places in Manhattan, three places in/around SF, and matched at my #1 choice.

Thanks for the info. So we can put this into context, how strong of an applicant do you think you were, in terms of your med school, grades, boards, and all that other fun stuff? Thanks! 😀

I don't think I am the best applicant ever. I did fine in a US med school, passed everything with fair margin, honored my psych rotation, and had good letters. I did do an elective at a program that I was interested in, and I got along with the other residents and the RD really well. And this program became my first choice during that month. I visited again during Christmas time, and while this RD did not tell me how he was going to rank me, I felt that I had a good chance. I ultimately only ranked three programs. I don't think I would do this any differently if given the choice.

Applied to 12. Got interviews at all. Cancelled one because my husband said he didn't want to live in that city and I didn't really want to either. Didn't interview at another because of scheduling. Did second visits at two. (Not to suck up, but because I couldn't decide.) Then matched at my #1 🙂

10 interviews was gruelling (and expensive) but I really didn't know where I wanted to go.
