How many characters do we get for our personal essay?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here are the exact instructions from the 2010 cycle, including character limits.

"Your Personal Statement should address why you desire to pursue a dental education and how a dental degree contributes to your personal and professional goals.

You are encouraged to compose your statement in a text-only word processor (e.g., Notepad), review your statement for errors, then cut and paste the final version into the text box above. Click the Save button and return to the Personal Statement to review the formatting of your text. You are limited to approximately 1 page (4500 characters, including spaces).

Some formatting characters used in programs like Word (angled quotes, accents, special characters) will not display properly. Carefully review your final text and to make the necessary corrections to the format."

I have seen it is 4500. Is that with or without spaces included? Or is that even the right number, thanks

"What should be included in my personal essay?

Deans from the medical, dental and veterinary schools recommend being specific when discussing your motivation for seeking a career in the medical, dental or veterinary field. Discuss people, experiences, and events that have contributed to your decision and how you have prepared yourself for your goal of becoming a physician, dentist or veterinarian. Indicate your goals relevant to the profession and discuss them within the context of your vision for your future practice. Content is the more important than length.

Remember that you are limited to 62 lines of text, 80 characters per line, for your personal essay. Space and symbols count towards the character limit. "

So to sum it up you have 4,960 characters and that includes spaces.

Just in case you didn't already know, all Texas residents (as far as I know) are required to apply to Texas schools through the TMDSAS site. If you are only applying to Texas schools like me, then you will not be using AADSAS.

The application opens up on May 1st.

If any of you are Texas residents and are applying to both instate and out of state schools, make sure your essay is formatted specifically for each application (note the difference in character limits). Also, I believe that on the TMDSAS application, they cut off the ends of lines that are too long, rather than wrap the text like AADSAS (don't quote me on this one, it has been a while). 🙂

thanks guys, applying both in and out of state. Guess I'll need to cut down to 4500 for out of state and use that for both.

I think its funny when the application tells you to state your future practise goals, like I could actually say specific things such as if I wanted to specialize or not before I got to dental school and actually experiencing what procedures I do and don't enjoy.

Some people have an idea about where they want to specialize. The question could also cover things such as doing charity work, where you want to practice, if you want to own your own business...etc. Just a few suggestions
