For those docs who are employees, are you restricted to a certain time limit to conduct eye examinations? If you go over/under said time limit, what are the consequences?

What is the ideal time limit for an eye examination?

thanks.

I'm not employed but I believe that the number of examinations per hour that a doc can do is largely dependent on the quality of support staff helping the doctor. If a lot of the data gathering can be delegated to technicians, it's easy to see 4, 5 or even 6 per hour. (In my office, I see 4 per hour.)

If support staff is not good, they can actually be a hinderance.

Every office setting is different. The examinations seen per hour depends on what type of examination is being conducted.

For refractions for glasses or contacts, I don't like to see more than 3 per hour. I really like to take the time to trial frame my patients distance, computer, near Rx, and discuss all lens options.

For post op cataract or anterior segment surgeries, I can see around 8 per hour.

For routine glaucoma, diabetes, plaquenil, acute red eye, or other disease patients, I don't like to see more than 4 per hour.

Most of my time spent with patients is actually providing patient education or chatting. For actual examination of the eyes, this part is actually very fast and brief.

For ME, this is what I tell my staff to schedule. I feel like any less time would be underserving my patients. Any more patients than this would also stress me out!
