Is there a point that you're just replacing too many grades? Or is the ending gpa all they care about? Would showing up with 10 fails replaced with A grades be a big deal to DO schools?

If the Fs were all early on and you had had nothing but an upward trend since then, your application would likely receive consideration. DO schools recognize that sometimes when kids start college, they aren't as mature as they might later be, or that they might go through some difficult times. Grade replacement allows you to show that you have matured or overcome your previous behavior or hardships.

If, on the other hand, you had an F or two a semester throughout your college career and then you got the grades replaced, you would have more of an uphill battle to climb, as this shows you had not just a bad semester or two, but an established history of failure that stretched on for several years. You can't just fail a class or two in med school and continue on, so you're too much of a risk to admit, as your chance of failing out of med school would be quite high.

Yeah, depends when they are and how they are grouped together. If u had like 5 in a semester, obviously it was probably a personal issue. If you are consistently failing classes including upper division courses your last two years, it will not look as "good"

But there is not a precise max number of grades, despite any policy your school may have, nor is there a requirement to how old or how recently the course was taken the first time or retaken.

My 2 cents:

I was one of those who consistently did poorly on my science courses (not D or F, but C+ seemed to be as high as I could get) for several semesters. Doing a few retakes definitely would not cut it for me, so I had to knock some sense into me and do a post-bacc with lots of science courses to show I had learned my lesson. I did two semesters of retakes and it paid off with two DO schools acceptances back in August of this year.

But, in theory, you can retake your entire undergrad and end up with an AACOMAS GPA of 4.00 if you'd like. There are people here on SDN who were accepted after retaking the same course more than two times even, so retaking a course multiple times is not a death sentence.

Your 2 cents is appreciated and congratulations on the acceptances. To how many schools did you apply?

14 schools, all DO. The retakes were totally worth it, I can finally move on to the next stage.
