I have heard a lot about how optometrists are frustrated at how many retail chains are offering optometric services. I can't decide how I feel about the issue. Personally, as a patient, I would probably not go to a mall optometrist or one at a retail chain. But, if I were an optometrist, and I know I am providing a quality service to the best of my abilities, but the only job I could find was at the mall, I might be okay with that. So, out of curiosity, how many out there are okay with working at the mall, retail chains, etc.? Is it really all that bad?

Sometimes optometrists don't have a choice, so liking it or not is a moot point. It's really not that bad. You get set hours and the pay initially is great. The cases are 99% straight forward so less headaches for you but that can be a good and bad thing. Most of the admin stuff is taken care of, so all you have to worry about is the exam itself. All the doc s that I talked to say at that stage in the game, who really cares, but they could be lying, I don't know.

vtrain,
What made you go to med school right after optometry school? Did you practice as an optometrist at all?
