Hi,
I'm a first year resident in Paris, France, and I was wondering for how many patients are you in charge ?
I'm sorry if there is similar threads but I've tried the "search" function and didn't find the answer...

In the ICU it varied between 6 and 14. Usually only had 14 for my call day and the morning after - at which point they were re-distributed.

On the medicine floors we capped at 10. I was on a very high-turnover team, so often I would finish a call day with 8 or 9, but be down to 2 or 3 by my next call 3 days later.

Surgical services tend to have more patients per resident.

On the surgical service, we have no caps. At my current hospital rotation (busy general surgery service), there's only one intern and one senior on-call at a time (q3) and the senior is usually in the OR covering cases. Thus, I'm the go-to person for all the patients on our service (usually around 30 at any given time), including the ICU and ED. Of course, I'm always in touch with my senior and attendings for any questions or clarifications of orders.

Often times though, I'm called to cover a case in the late afternoon when the pre-call residents have gone home. So short of an emergency, I'm running the service over the phone while operating since nobody is free to physically see patients.

10 new medicine patients per call, but we are not a closed ICU so these could be floor or MICU patients.
