Hello, I was wondering what is a good amount of transitional/med prelim programs I should apply to? US med grad, usmle score 220s going obviously into anesthesia. I was interested in TY more than med prelim. Whats a healthy # of programs.

My school's been telling us to apply to about 10 prelim programs. But that's their generic advice for everyone applying to any field that requires a prelim year.

If you're interested in TY programs, I'd probably apply to more than 10. TY programs are going to have a lot of optho/derm/rads/rad-onc applicants with much higher board scores. Would probably apply to some prelim programs, also, particularly at your home institution.

10-15 TY + 4-6 Prelim. Interview at ~8-10 and you should be fine.

Note that this # can vary depending on geographic preferences. (e.g. do you want to do your prelim and anesthesia in the same city? or maybe stay in your current city another year before moving? etc etc...)

Keep in mind that more and more programs are going to 4 years, so applying to TY and prelim programs may be less of an issue once you decide which residency programs you're interested in.

Thanks guys who replied, your advice is much appreciated. I think I will apply to like 10-12 med prelim programs and 10-12 TY programs. Also, how many anesthesia programs do you think I should apply to?

10-20, again depending on geographical preferences.
