How many times did you apply before you got accepted into pharmacy school?

This girl I know told me that I won't get accepted when I apply because it will be my first time and NOBODY gets in with less than 4 tries. She then said that she will not be applying the year I am because a lot of people in her minority will be applying then, and if she applies the next year when there is nobody from that minority, they will be forced to accept her because they will have to have diversity (is this true for professional programs?). She also tried to say that people with 4.0 GPAs and 35 on the ACT (she didn't know about the PCAT score because she didn't know it even existed) we not accepted because it is that competitive.

Why do you listen to people with wild imaginations? 🙂 That amount of neuroticism can't be healthy. You're just in high school! You have many years to worry about this later.

Your friend is way off base. Maybe you should buy your friend the SDN Admission's Guide.

It's not unreasonable to assume that with an extremely limited number of spots and an astronomical number of applicants that yes, every year, there will be qualified people who aren't accepted. That said, I know people who got in their very first year, and I know people who applied 3-4 years before they got accepted.

PharmCAS school pages often list statistics for schools' last class, including average GPAs, so check that out if you want to get an idea of quote-unquote-normal. Then remember that averages include both highs and lows.

All you can do is your best! Study, volunteer, and get that application done early.

This is my first year applying and I've been accepted to multiple programs. Tell your "friend" to do her research.

That girl needs to do research. Everyone I know has applied once (a few applied twice) and got into a school.

So what if they accept her to just fill some seats? If you get in, then be happy. The question once you are accepted is whether or not you will make it through. If she thinks that when she is accepted it was to fill some seats, tell her to just not take the acceptance and give up her seat to someone else.

Many if not most pharmacy schools are private and as a result they do no have to have diversity, so your friend is horribly wrong (I wish that weren't the case, as part of the male minority of applicants I'd be almost guaranteed a slot <vbg>). The schools only need to make their selections in a fair and unbiased manner, so, it is all based on merit.
P-)

That minority/diversity part is hysterical! I wonder where she thinks all the minorities are going to disappear to when she applies the next year. Obviously she doesn't know what she is talking about if she didn't even know about the PCAT.

I only applied once to answer your question.

Maybe she's trying to motivate you? I say stuff like that to my roommate who is a slacker....because he truly is a slacker. He thinks he will get into pharmacy because he is such a great individual  .

Back on topic: make sure your gpa is competitive, and you will have a equal chance as everybody else in getting accepted.

First time applying, got rejected by one, accepted by two pharmd. programs.

sounds like reverse psychology to me; she's telling you all this in an attempt to dissuade you from pursuing a career in pharmacy. don't be tricked by her cheap tactics 😛

Plz don't listen to her, she's nothing but to discourage you. This is my first time applying, and I got into 3 so far, and I don't have 4.0 GPA or 99% PCAT.
Good Luck🙂.

I knew better than to believe her. It was so hard to not laugh when she said that to me. I'd actually like to find how many people actually have a 4.0 GPA all through college.

are there even any pharmacy schools that give a crap about your act/sat scores?

I got this from the website:
"The Admissions Committee must rely heavily on objective data, particularly science and mathematics grade average, overall grade average, ACT (American College Test) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test) scores. A preliminary selection of applicants will be made based on an initial evaluation of these criteria. Applicants selected by this initial process will be required to appear for a personal interview before a committee composed of faculty members and pharmacy students."

The fact that she doesn't even know what the PCAT is gives it away...she doesn't know what she's talking about. at all.

Maybe your friend got confused with medical school which is what my roomate is applying to. Many advisors tell student to be aware that it may take many students a minimum of two times applying to get in and some times more. This doesnt happen to all students but three of my friends got in on their 2 application cycle and only one got in on his first.Which surprised me since they were all good candidates. Anyways this is not to true for many other professional programs.

I got into pharmacy school the fifth time that I applied but I only applied to one school. Each year I just worked on ways to improve my application because I really wanted to go to that school. There is no magic number on how many times you have to apply before you get in. Some get in right away, while others must reapply. I would not listen to that misguided girl on this.

Congrats on getting in, but 5 times to one school? Does not sound like the best idea unless you can move and have to say at your current school.

It's not the right choice for everyone but I wanted to go to that school. I do not look at it as wasted time. I was able to finish my undergrad from there. I also obtained valuable pharmacy experience in oncology and earned a very nice promotion during that time.

why are you taking pharmacy school advice from someone who didn't even know the PCAT existed?

hmmm..... 👎

my pharmacist asked me what the PCAT is when I told him I'm working on raising my score. He said what is the PCAT? I said the admission test. He said "oh to get in?...haha I didn't have to take it when I was applying. "

I thought, but at least being a pharmacist you should know what it is right? i mean omigod?!?

I didn't take it, but I know what it is 😛

I'm from San Diego, but I did take the PCAT to apply out of state. However, most of my pre-pharm friends didn't know what it was because california pharmacy schools (UCSF, USC, etc) do NOT require the PCAT.

So depending on what schools you want to apply to, you may or may not know what the PCAT is.
