I am chipping away at the very daunting work that it takes to gain acceptance into a US dental school, and I am wondering, how many times you applied before you were accepted? I am never going to give up, but I want a sense of what its really like out there. Today is one of those days where the hill seems too steep to climb, and as you all probably know, a good student can't afford too many of those days. I appreciate anyone who cares to answer this. I am very very curious to get a feel for this.

The 3rd one was the good one. Got accepted at 21.

Not sure what you mean by "a good student can't afford too many of those days". Trust me, dental school will provide many of these very trying days for you. I wish you all the luck though. I know it sounds cliche but if you really want it, you'll make it happen. I was hours away from clicking "submit" on my 4th application when I found out I got in (June 2008).

2nd time was the charm for me. I applied early (by end of May) both times, but I applied to 15 schools the second time rather than only 5 as I did the first round. I valued the year off, because I do not take my presence in dental school for granted. I work very hard and feel blessed by the opportunity I have been given to be a member of this wonderful profession.

Would people mind posting their stats as well as how many tries it took? I think it would help me know what i'm in for.

I got it in on m first attempt, but I have had classmates that attempted 3-5 times. What you have to do is never give up stay persistent and not be afraid to go wherever you get accepted. Apply to as many schools as possible. A the end of the day it doesn't matter where you went to school, as long as you get the initials behind your name. Patients don't care where you went to school, all they care about is that you don't hurt them.
