I trying to determine what the best approach for taking the DAT would be? I am thinking about studying during the spring semester of my junior year and taking it at the end of April and then if I do not do well take it again 3 months later at the end of July, or the other option being studying and taking it during the middle of the summer. Also, I was unsure how these two plans fit into the appropriate application time-line?

you can take hte DAT up to 3 times without asking for permission I believe, anything more than 3 requires special permission. The plan in april is fine, as long as you dont have a heavy schedule during that semester, if you do have classes that will distract you, take it 4 weeks after your spring semester ends, therefore you would have prepared lightly during your spring semester while doing well in your classes, then once the spring semester is over you cram for 4 weeks and take it then. This way it leaves you room to retake if you must by the end of august.

when are you planning to apply tho?
Are you applying on the same summer as the DAT? If yes, I personally wouldn't do the end of april.... Your odds of needing a retake are higher when you take it end of April (vs. taking it in June)... cause that way, you'll have more free time (away from school) to devote into the DAT.
