I'm wondering how many I should apply to being that I'm not the most competitive applicant ever...I'm sure everyone applying to TY programs have amazing numbers, so is it even worth it for someone without stellar step 1s to even apply to TY? Should I just stick to prelims? And if so, how many should I apply to?

IM Prelims and TY's have become more competitive. Nothung sucks more than matching to an Advanced program, not getting a prelim, and losing your advanced match. I can't tell you how many to apply to, since that depends on many factors in your application. But, you'll be much better off if you get too many interview offers rather than too few.

See the problem is I am applying to categorical as well as a backup that I would be very happy with. That makes applying to TY and prelims much more complicated because I can't apply to the same programs. I'm just trying to figure out how many to apply to in which I will be considered safe? And how to go about this juggling progress of where to apply for categorical vs prelim.

Depends on your competitiveness, if you have Step I>220, I suggest 20-30 programs for 10-12 interviews.
On a related note, on some ERAS transitionals it says:
Transition Year (Categorical)
or even worse it has three choices:
Preliminary, Transitional, Categorical

What in the name of Jehovah does this mean? Does it mean that you have to match into the IM program in the same institution in order to get the transitional? (you can throw stones at me now...)
