Ill get right too it. I am 25 and have a wife and two young kids. I have a pretty good application (see previous posts of mine if you are curious). While I will be applying to many many schools across the country, getting into my state school would be INCREDIBLY helpful from a financial and logistical stand point. First, I am renting a small house from a family member who is graciously allowing me to pay just the mortgage so I would not need to move my family across the country and would also save a ton of money. Second, I would obviously benefit from instate tuition. Third, we have a lot of family that lives in the area which acts as a great support system for me and even more so my wife who works so hard to take care of our kids every day while I'm at school or work.

Obviously a great application is needed to get into medical school, but does anyone think that the financial/family/logistical challenges I have could play an important role? And how should I address this situation in my application (I apply this coming cycle).

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't think adcoms are going to take your living situation into account when reviewing your app (other than your in state status). There are quite a few others that would like to stay in state as much as you do and would benefit from lower tuition. With that said, there is nothing wrong with playing up your ties to the area during an interview or letter of interest. Good luck.

I agree with WeeIceMan. Your financial situation is not really a concern to the adcom, but if you can convince them of your local ties, they will understand that you are enthusiastic about their school and would likely matriculate if accepted. If you have the stats/ECs/experiences, then your story can help you get your foot in the door, but if you don't, your story won't garner you any points at all.

If this is the ONLY school you would go to and your stats are competitive you could consider Early Decision

I agree with above posts that you should talk about this in the interviews, but do not forget to mention why you like the school itself. The strengths of the school should probably be named first, actually, and the family situation last, as an additional point. Good luck! 🙂

Two things to highlight in your secondary and/or interviews depending on if the opportunity presents itself:

1) you have a support network in the area that will be helpful if the need arises.
2) given the opportunity you will matriculate.

The first is important because schools can be worried that a student will wash out due to family or personal crisis and having a support network nearby can alleviate that concern.
The second is important because some schools want to maximize their yield meaning that they don't want to waste an offer on someone who will turn them down.

I know feel OP. I want to go to my state school real bad too. I mean I know every backwater in my state almost.
