Typically I drink 3-4 cups of coffee daily + 1 cup of tea. I realize that this may be excessive, but it allows me to focus well on my studies. Honestly though, I really enjoy drinking coffee and it is doesn't help that I love the taste.

Now the question is...

What method of caffeine ingestion do you prefer? Daily amount?

zilch. If I need to pull an all nighter though, it's energy drinks and espresso.

I used to drink Mountain Dew like it was water...then I started to get fat. So I switched to Diet Coke...which I learned also makes you fat. I hate the taste of coffee and unsweet tea so I just drink water now.

In regards to tea...there's only two flavors: sweet and "needs more sugar". 😀

Doesn't espresso have caffeine?

I don't do caffeine at all either. Here and there, but mostly none. Love a good cup of coffee some every now and again I'll have some, but I dont even do tea, energy drinks, nada.

I try to stay away from energy drinks due to the massive amounts of sugar. I usually drink my coffee w/ 2% milk and no sugar.

I know, for a fact, that there are you coffee drinkers out there just like me...quit hiding. This thread is getting skewed towards the angels and saints that rely solely on the natural energies of the universe for their studies.

I've seen a show about some Americans that drinking 4-6 liters of Coke...DAILY!! Don't get me wrong, I love drinking a nice cup of ice cold coke on a hot day, but that is crazy. And unhealthy!

One cup of extremely dark, fresh ground Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee every morning... which is like 150mg of caffeine?

When it's crunch time, more like 1000+mg of caffeine/day

Is that the stuff from Trader Joes?

Sugar is the devil, but coffee is cool

for some reason I feel like tea is a lot better. Sometimes I will go on spats where I'm at 2 20oz per day, then the last week I've been only pretty much only 3 cups a week, but I will do blueberry black tea which is the 'ish and so is pomegranate green tea is also amazing.

I do love coffee.

A 3 or 4 years ago, I was on this Rock Star binge, where I had 2 a day. I didn't have any on Christmas day that year and my mind exploded with a migraine.

I think the busier I get, the more I have to have caffeine (hence the lower intake right now).

Agreed. But doesn't it make you think about when you're a resident? I know I will drink a truck load of coffee to work those crazy hours. Not to sound pretentious, but your patients can die if you're feeling really tired.

I have coffee problem. 2 cups in the morning, sometimes one in the mid day, and 2 in the evening if I'm studying, which I usually am. However, during breaks, such as now, I usually cut out the two evening cups. I should probably cut them out all together because A) They really don't help you concentrate, and B) I would fall asleep easier.

Triple shot espresso every weekday for about 1 yr.
Several pots of coffee are consumed on weekends by me and my bf.
Its pretty excessive and pretty expensive. But its more of a ritual in the AM than anything else. I work/go to class 7 am to 7-9pm every weekday so I get up at 5 most days.

I believe Trader Joes has it, however I do not purchase mine from there. You can basically buy it from any place that has a decent coffee selection. It's stupidly expensive but unfortunately after having my first cup I can't drink anything else... at least it's cheaper than buying starbucks and alike

Damn you! I'm tempted to try it now...okay I will try it when I run out, oh wait I only have a little coffee grind left. I guess I have to go pick some up later tonight. 🙄

Nope! Don't think it's really bad for you, would just rather not be dependent on it.

Unfortunately, I have to admit that I am addicted to coffee. Like they say, the first step is admitting it. However, I keep telling myself that after the MCAT, I will lay off coffee for a while. I'm thinking of pushing the MCAT back a couple months, so I think that just increased my coffee abusing duration. *sigh*

3-4 cups a day...black.

when im on break/at home i try not to... but usually have a massive headache by noon and pass out by 1. so need 1 or 2 cups to function. ... more to operate on a higher level and accomplish anything.

i cant quit anytime i want. really.

You are even more extreme than me. I used to buy my coffee from Starbucks, Pete's, etc. However, I realized how much money I would save had I just made it at home. So I went to Walmart, invested $20 and bought this really awesome coffee maker, that has a auto-brew function, and make my coffee at home. Unfortunately, this means I basically have an unlimited supply of it. Needless to say, that's why I drink so much!

I drink coffee every day unless it's exam time, then I switch to loose leaf green tea. If I have to study 12+ solid hours in a day I can't have too much caffeine at once because it negatively affects my overall retention; thus the switch to green tea (which is awesome btw).

Occasional cappuccino after dessert...

During Finals:
1. huge cuban coffee/"collada"
2. monster energy drink (4pack)

annihilates any melatonin molecules in ur system!!

I never drink caffeinated drinks normally, but if I know I'm gonna be in for an all nighter I'll usually have a tea or some type of soda.

Yeah I go to starbucks daily. There is a Pete's coffee in my state building at work as well. In past months I've spent about 4-5 dollars per weekday on white mochas, etc. I am saving up to get a bigger apartment now so I have bought a french press to take to work. The main reason I go to starbucks is because Im too lazy to get up early enough to make a pot and then package it and take it to work. Now I can make it at work with hot water!

Basically, the caffeine boost allows me to operate on God Mode and I get a whole bunch of stuff accomplished. Except right now b/c I am suppose to start my studying for the day, but instead having this very interesting conversation about coffee on SDN w/ you fine people.

So just rereading this post, I realized that I sound a lot like the doctors that abuse drugs in the hospital....hmmm

Make sure you buy 100% and not some cheaper half-effort blend. It runs about $25/pound in 100% whole bean form and lasts 20 weekdays for me.

Sorry if I am opening the flood gates to a new coffee addiction 😀

That's awesome! Yeah I would suggest getting a coffee maker w/ an auto-brew function. I set it up at night and wake up to the smell of fresh coffee. Everyday of my life now is like this..

The flood gates have been penetrated a loooonng time ago..a long time ago. Dammit, I'm getting really excited about trying this stuff now.

Wait till your classes become more demanding...then we'll see if this statement still holds true.

I brew a 16 oz travel mug of peets twice a day. Once in the morning and once before work at about 5:00PM.

Oh and I drink it black

3-4 cups (which is around what I drink, like the OP) is nothing. Voltaire supposedly drank 50-80 a day.

I drink two large 100% colombian (all black) at night during exam time. During regular school days when I have midterms, I do double shot expresso and diet coke. I used to drink Monster too, but I think it just made me jittery a bit.

My bf only drinks coke or coffee, literally no water... EVER. Probably about 1-2 liters of coke per day depending on how far away his next paycheck is. I hate it. Absolutely hate it. Won't listen to me though!

coffee in the morning, then bump with pop later in the day

i get WICKED withdrawals if i don't have it

I once drank a standard starbucks cup size of tea w/ 3 bags of black tea on an empty stomach. I almost threw up in class. Oh, and yes it was one of those crammed lecture rooms...so the 3 people in front of me would have had a bad morning.

Tea: I drink one cup everyday, usually at night.
Coffee: Once or twice a week. I prefer my coffee to be Turkish, but I chose not to purchase the necessary equipments to make it myself.

If I can prepare it at home, I know I would lose self-control and eventually succumb to caffeine overdose.

You ladies are always too worried about your guys. Didn't you know us guys don't need water intake?

Water is for the weak.

Yes I agree. He should drink more water. As we all know, coffee has ADH blockers and most of his h20 is getting drained. See I am studying right now!

This is probably the smartest thing I've ever heard on SDN.

also he smokes!

lol...espresso is definitely a concentrated cup of coffee in a few little ounces.

I used to only drink coffee during exams. However, now that I work at the cafe in Barnes & Noble, I have an out of control addiction. To make matters worse, we get a 50% discount on everything in the cafe. smh. My typical caffeine intake is 2 large sugar free Red Bulls, with 4 espresso shots sprinkled in throughout the day. I'm afraid to see what's going to happen once I start med school and lose this discount :scared:

Ugh. Yeah smoking is definitely a turn off. Personally, I think girls that smoke are Ugh. How can they ingest those toxic fumes into their bodies? It's disgusting. The worst part is the smell of it in their hair/clothes.

We're talking about cigarettes right?

Probably alone in some alley way, shivering, talking to yourself. Just a guess though.

lol. Sadly, I don't think you're too far off. I think I'll slowly start the weening process around April....maybe late February.

none as of now, but I gotta 830am next semester which means coffee

Either 1 large iced black coffee or 1 large iced black Americano. Mmmmm... Sometimes I will switch it up with an energy drink. And depending on the demand for caffiene (i.e., tests or overnight floorsets at work), I might increase the amount.
