How much Coffee is too much?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Definitely. Multiple studies have shown that coffee dramatically reduces lifespan, prostate function and sperm production. 4-5 cups a day? Holy **** - try to enjoy life while you can. You may not make it to your 30s.

You're probably okay until you've graduated to this size:

I figure one cup of coffee is usually around ~80 mg of caffeine. So 5 cups is probably pushing it at around 400 mg total.

I'd say its only unhealthy if you absolutely need the caffeine in order to function. I'd try to scale back a bit and see how that works, and try not to drink caffeine too late in the day obviously (I stop after 12:00 PM).

3-5 cups? I'd say get off the caffeine nipple and get yourself down to 1-2 a day.

My extensive literature review suggests otherwise.

Oh, come on. Wikipedia? Can be edited by anyone! I'm sure that article was written entirely by Starbucks junkies.

Easy way to find out: Stop for a day. Headaches/irritability/lethargy = cut back a bit.

I'll have anywhere from 16-32 ounces in a day.

So im drinking about 4-5 cups of coffee daily, sometimes it might come down to 2-3 cups. So is drinking 3-5 cups of coffee everyday unhealthy?

If the following picture looks good to you...

...you may want to cut back.

The entry has proper references, and I think you're being sarcastic. Also, there is humor to be found in my previous post; you just have to look for it.

You're not really supposed to be seeking medical advice on SDN.

But I'll bite anyway. What do you put in your coffee? If you load it up each cup with cream and sugar I can see it being a source of unneccesary fat/calories/carbs. Just black coffee I think has very little nutritional value and few calories.

Uh, taking this way too seriously, maybe? I honestly did not mean to say that "this wikipedia article is written by people with an unhealthy Starbucks addiction who fraudulently put false references to further their coffee-selling agenda." Really? You really need to point out the proper references? FYI, I don't really believe that coffee shortens life expectancy to 30 and makes you sterile. I was kidding. Honestly.

Maybe just go to bed earlier?

Anyway I try to keep the coffee down to two small cups a day. I already hate the 2 hour aftertaste it leaves, I can't imagine having to deal with that all day. Besides, it's summer and I think iced coffee tastes like ****.

Personally I love coffee and I was drinking in everyday, not because I was sleepy but because I like the taste. But eventually it got to the point were it seemed that I was constantly tired unless I drank coffee, even when I got plenty of sleep. At that point I knew I needed to scale back on the caffeine.

Realize that caffeine is a psychoactive drug. It is addictive and can cause withdrawal symptoms. I suggest that if are having symptoms such as headaches or fatigue without drinking coffee, that you should scale back.

My usual schedule for a day:

Large cup of coffee with breakfast
2 Venti Macchiatos throughout the day (3x espresso shots each)
1 Venti Macchiato or Large Latte in the evening (3x espresso each)

I can cut down to one or two cups of coffee (coffee, not espresso) a day without headaches. However, I enjoy the taste and smell. Now factor in costs for me- money is negligible! My campus has a Starbucks on-site. My resident advisor positions covers my coffee habits. I love my job.

Good Lord.

Welll....

According to a Norwegian cancer cohort study, the average Norwegian coffee drinker who has 7+ cups of coffee per day (I guess they really love their coffee there) had a 50% reduction in their risk for renal cancer.

So maybe its not all that bad, and definitely not like the black tar heroine Apopthecary is describing it as. Seven cups seems far too much for me. Personally, I enjoy a cup of tea in the morning before class/work, and a cup of coffee during that 4:30 feeling at the end of the day. Maybe we should all switch over to five hour energy so we don't have that 4:30 feeling anymore...

Napping is a much more effective 4:30 feeling wiper outer.

I agree. But I enjoy it as a beverage with a snack while doing work. Its just a point for relaxation for me, and if I'm writing or reading research papers its not really to keep me awake, its more as just a flavorful treat and relaxant. Or just as a dessert after dinner.

I only went that extreme when I was doing the SMP/working full time. I got off that fast.

Why not just concentrate your coffee?😎

no its not bad for you.

Fair enough. I enjoy the taste of black coffee, but when I get drowsy while doing work, I prefer to just stop doing work.

. Too much makes me go meowzers.
haha tahts a funny word :]

I would suggest not drinking that much coffee. Too lazy to go look up negative long term effects but I do know that drinking large amounts on regular basis makes your body "get used to" the caffeine and it wont have the oh-so-desired-wake-the-eff-up effect any more.

Um, that's approaching $100 a work-week for coffee, no? Include weekends and you're over $100... :scared:

Oh easily 100$. If I was paying for it out of pocket, then I couldn't afford it. My RA job gives me over 1400$ to spend on food for eleven weeks. If I don't spend it, then it disappears. Facilitates the habit

I drink 16-20oz about every night. I don't know why either. I do not feel right if I don't drink any. I have no problems sleeping though and I do not crave it in the morning.

I've found above 10-12 cups per day is too much. I try to stick to 2 or 3 on an average day.
