I'm trying to figure out how much I'm going to have to save in order to apply to med school. How much did it cost you all together including the cost of MCAT prep, the MCAT, the applications and secondaries, and travel. Right now I'm :scared: because even If i do make the grade there is a distinct chance that I won't be able to afford the costs.

You should think long and hard if you truly are willing to become a DO. I see a bunch of people in the Pre-DO forum saying they got rejected at MD and now they are debating a SMP or to take their DO acceptance. If you are not serious about DO, apply to a 5 SMP (Dartmouth, Columbia, Georgetown, Cincinnati, and Tufts) and apply to 10 more MD.

I didnt apply to as many schools as your looking at...but here is a rough estimate of my costs off the top of my head:

-$1500 Kraplan Course (Waste of money, decent books (aside from VR)) (Taken in 2006)
-$75 Berkely Review VR book (Loved it) (used in 2008)
-$200 Exam Krackers book set (hated it) (used in 2008)
-$230 MCAT (took it multiple times, but will only count it once here) (taken in 2008)
-$180 AMCAS application fee for 1 school (approx. cost) (August 2009)
-$350 AACOMAS application fee for 8 schools (approx. cost) (August 2009)
-$300 Secondary Application Fees (only submitted 5 secondary apps, planned on waiting on others) (August - October 2009)
-$700 New Suit,Belt,Tie,Shirt,Shoes (October 2009)
-$270 Air fare for LECOM interview (November 2009)
-$70 Hotel for 1 night in PA (November 2009)
-$50 Car rental in PA (November 2009)
-$20 food on interview in PA (November 2009)
-$1500 payment to hold my acceptance at LECOM (March 2010)
-$300 medical fees for antibody titers and immunizations required by LECOM that were not covered by insurance (March 2010)
-$65 FBI criminal history report required by LECOM (March 2010)
_______________
total = $5870.00

This is just from my application this year however. I did apply last year and the year before that and also took the MCAT multiple times...however, I didnt know about the great world of SDN at the time and did a lot of things wrong...so I didnt count those previous mishaps in this calculation. These are rough estimates..to be safe I would round it up to about 6K and since your applying to several more schools than I did, I would probably add another 2K on to that if you decide to go on a lot of interviews...

Having listed everything, there are a few things, if I were to repeat all this from the beginning, that I wouldnt do again...First off, save 1000 bucks by not funding the stupid kaplan program and just buy their books and online material which last time I checked were about 500 dollars. I probably would have done without some of the EK books (I didnt like them, I found their explainations to be extremely poor), but would have done their 1001 books instead...maybe save 50 dollars off that.

My strategy for applying was some what unique in that my state school doesnt accept OOS applications and generally only has ~350 applicants with 130 seats...so the odds arnt as bad as the majority of other allopathic schools. Because of this, I had originally planned to send out 7 primary apps for AACOMAS and then send in the secondaries in groups of two with one month between each group...sending my first and second choice DO schools first, then third and forth the next month...etc. I ended up having a great interview at my state school and decided to hold off on sending out my lower choice DO schools (so only submitted like 4 DO school secondaries)...so, this saved me atleast another 200 dollars plus whatever I would have spent on other interviews I got offerred, though I dont recommend taking this sort of strategy unless you really have to.

Its definately not cheap to apply (especially if you have to do it multiple times), so make sure you get things done right the first time and definately dont cut corners...for instance, if your going to apply DO, make sure you get a DO letter, its too much money to risk not being given a serious look by the schools simply because you didnt shadow a DO regardless of what their webpage says about required letters.

I applied to only four schools, but this might give you an idea.

-1700 Kaplan
-250 Other MCAT study material
-300 AMCAS
-290 MCAT (had to reschedule)
-100 UofL Seat deposit
-250 Secondary Apps
-450 Travel (Gas and Food)

Figure on app fees (primary and secondary) of approx $100 per school.

Interview costs vary depending on if you have to fly or drive, if you need a hotel room, etc. But for plane ride schools, figure on $500 per interview...

So if you apply to 25 schools, and attend 10 interviews, you could be looking at around $7500 max, less for schools within short driving distance...

I never added it all up, but I sent out 25 primaries, did 15 secondaries, and attended 7 interviews. Only 3 of the interviews required flying. Nonetheless, I always stayed in a hotel room (for personal comfort) at the schools that required overnight travel (5 schools) so I guess I still spent around $4k...maybe a little more.

Ain't cheap...

it definitely pays to do it right the first time.

But, take in mind that I paid a 1500 fee to hold my seat at a DO school. DO schools are notorious to charging exuberant fees to hold a seat. If you stick with Allopathic schools, you shouldn’t have to worry about this as much...I don’t think.

So really if you've got the grades/MCATs for straight up allopathic schools, you can probably go with 3-4K and be okay...depending on how many you apply to. Secondly, the majority of the 6K I spent was spent over the course of a year and the Kraplan couse was taken back in 2006...so atleast you dont have it all up front....

I went back to my cost listing and put in the dates that I payed out to give a better idea.

Keep in mind that if you qualify for FAP, your fees are DRASTICALLY reduced. You get to send your primary app to 13 schools for free, and after that each is $31. I applied to 16 schools so only had to pay $93 here.

AND, 99% of your secondary application fees (which can range from $30 to over $100 each) are waived. I say 99% because I still had to pay at a couple places that don't offer that luxury (UF was one, I believe).

I got 4 interviews, and only one was out of state. So after everything considered (flights, hotel, interview clothes, few app fees, MCAT prep stuff - I didn't take a course, and MCAT fee), I probably spent about $500-$600. I think I got off pretty easy there...

My first application cycle, which included MCAT studying and fees, was about $3000. My second was about $2100, but that didn't include anything having to do with the MCAT.

Keep in mind that if you apply DO, you will need a large deposit to hold your place in the class, and it won't always be refundable. MD schools generally only require $100-200 deposit, which is refundable up until May 15. DO school deposits can be up around a thousand dollars.

I didn't do an MCAT prep course.

I'd say it was about $3k, but I only had to fly to 2 different interviews. I was able to drive to most of them and just had to pay for hotels. You could probably save a little if you stayed with student hosts.

$100 MCAT study materials (no course, they're a ripoff)
$200 MCAT
$650 for 23 primary appications
~$1650 for 22 secondary applications
$1000 for airfare (3 flights to east coast, 2 to socal for 13 interviews, scheduling your interviews together is a great thing)
0$ for hotels. (Student hosts + distant family FTW)

Total: $3600 Ouch.

Worth every penny though, as I am going to a great med school that probably wouldn't have been on my list if I had applied to fewer schools.

TBR Mcat course, 32 schools, 32 secondaries, flew to 9/13 interviews all over the country, hotels, and food comes down to:

= $8950

I applied to 26 schools and went to 15 interviews, many of them out of states. I spent >$8000 for the whole thing. Geez.🙁 This thread makes me feel bad. Really bad.

i dont really know how much it cost (a decent amount) but my flights weren't that expensive since its from PHL and everything is kinda close from here (even PHL to MSP was like $160 rt)

it would be nice to have 10-15k either in your account or at least coming in from salary. you are gonna need a decent amount for moving expenses and deposits and things like that after the cycle

Man, philly is the hub of USairway you do have saved a lot...

yea, rarely did i spend over $200 for a RT. but sometimes, schools are kinda douchey and they give you a date thats like a week from your invite

I would say about 15ish MD schools and 10 DO schools.

Just so you know, AMCAS does have a fee assistance program which has a generous guideline (300% of the poverty line) compared to many other need-based assistance programs. The FAP covers the primary app fee for ~ 13 schools, allows you to register for the MCAT for ~ $50, and most schools will provide fee waivers for secondaries if you qualified for the FAP.

I've spent around 5K. I flew to 2 places. It's crazy how some people apply to like 50 schools.

They are generous but it takes into consideration parent's income, regardless of whether or not they are helping you or you are independent so many people do not qualify.

That said, off the top of my head, my running total was

~1800 Kaplan MCAT
~225 MCAT Test
~600 AACOMAS (13 Schools)
~600 AMCAS (14 Schools)
~1300 Secondaries
~500 Travel to 2 interviews (one flight, one drive)
~200 Hotels for 2 interviews
~100 Sending LORs
~50 Sending transcripts
--------
5375 so far

Not to mention the classes i'm currently taking to try to boost my GPA up again that have cost me ~3000 but thats a different story. Re-applying come June 1st and prepared to spend almost the same again.

More than you can afford, or if you want you can just sell your kids.

About 5 grand, nearly all of which was put on credit cards. At the end of this month I will have paid it all off! Yahoo!

1 Kaplan course, 37 schools, 8 interviews (didn't get any interviews in my state. had to fly everywhere). About 8-9k.
