Just out of curiosity. Anyone know how much Deans make? Any idea of what an average salary is?

Hi.

$252,000

This is for a small osteopathic program in WV.

I am going to assume that a Dean's salary would be higher if it were at let say a urban allopathic program. I wouldn't be suprised if it were over half a million for a school like Mayo or Harvard.

At the University of Toledo our dean was reportedly making $450,000 a year (reported in the local media). However, in addition to being the dean of the College of Medicine he is also the provost of the Health Science Campus meaning he is also in charge of all of our healthcare facilities.

What's the path to becoming a dean? Or any higher-up administrator for a medical school? Is it all about knowing people and schmoozing?

I'm sure there's not a set, defined path. I'm also sure there's a lot of jockying to get the point were you'd even be considered.

for state jobs you can look up people's salaries on an online database if they make more than fifty thousand. at least in my state anyway. not everyone is there but most ppl are listed.

Likely the latter since the most important part of your job involves fundraising. I suspect (and am guessing based on the couple of deans I know about) the typical career path involves something like being faculty at an academic hospital, then adding administrative duties, then becoming an assistant dean, then dean of a department (admissions, student affairs, research, etc), then vice dean, then dean at a smaller school, then dean at a big school. Which is why there aren't many very young deans.

I was always under the impression that becoming a dean of a school had a lot to do with the position you held in the past. Perhaps, for example, you worked at a major academic hospital - and after sometime there became the residency program director for like IM or FP.

Schools will kind of want someone who is familiar with how residents get selected, so they'll pick out someone who did that in the past - cause they guy knows what it takes to mold better and more competitive students.

On top of this, it would also help if that person carried with him or her some sort of political clout. If you know your state senator or govenor - that's going to help your school a lot. If your friends with the higher up AMA doctors - you can bet that they'll like you for being a dean and you'll like them for giving you insight into what's going on politically. If Washington DC is about to knock off several millions of dollars from your school - it helps big time if some of your political connections tell you ahead of time so you have time to react.

Granted I don't know too many deans in person. But when the school looks for the qualities in a dean, I would imagine they'd be paying attention to items such as these.

walking through the hallway with former deans pics, i noticed that most of them were MD/PhD's. i don't think this is a requirement by any means, just thought it was interesting to note

Hmmm. If a Dean holds two titles, like the one you referenced, would they then make two salaries?! I mean, if you can be the Dean of Medicine and Provost, then you would be doing two jobs, so shouldn't you make 2 different salaries?

The dean of the BSD at UChicago had his salary listed in Chicago Magazine a few years ago. I want to say it was solidly in the 700s, but he's also in charge of much more than a medical school.

Update: Found it.
