OK, no one will give me a straight answer. For a new associate vs. someone in practice for 15 yrs........are we talking avg. $290K or am I waaaaay off? Anyone here worked for or IS in pedo?

I worked for a pedo who was established and had been working 25 years and was making well over 300gs. It all depends on location, speed, etc etc etc. Hard to generalize but I think the ada average listed is like 160,000 but i may be off.

It totally depends on:
1. how you setup and run your practice
2. The location of your practice
3. Scope of your practice

Two really good resources to use are:
USA Census reports
State by State dental usage statistics.

You want to set up a practice in a community with a conventional pyramidal population scale (as opposed to a diamond shape or inverse pyramid).

All in all if you do things right your earning capacity (net pay) after establishing a practice (say with 2 associates, which is pretty small) should be anywhere from 300k to 650k per annum. A bigger practice yields more in gross pay, but you are more likely to have a few partners in addition to associates... so your pay might be the same.
One of my classmate's dad is a pedo. Small practice with only one associate. He does not do any restorative work on his juvenile patients (something you can make a lot on: crowns, bridges, implants etc) and still walks away with 400k and change. He has been in practice since the early 80's in an extremely suburban area.

AMMD, this may be an ignorant question, but what exactly does a pediatric dentist do if he/she doesn't perform any restorative work? Just prophy and check? I'm really curious.

Sealants, fluoride, ortho, extractions, plus the stuff you mentioned. I imagine ortho would be a big moneymaker, doing space maintenance, and simple braces/retainers cases. Total speculation on my part, though.

thanks........just curious b/c my boyfriend is just getting his pedo cert. and just landed a job......he won't say how much he's going to make!

one thing's for sure....he'll be making a hell of a lot more than i will as a g.p.

I have also seen official numbers that place pedo just a little ahead of general dentistry in average earnings. There are plenty of GPs who are also making $300,000+ after 25 yrs.

But is $300-650,000/yr. avg???? - I don't think so; I would bet that once again AMMD is pulling stuff out of his butt. 😉

aphitis covered it pretty well (as always). The other thing is, most of the procedures that pedos do are a lot more involved... sedations. As the pedo resident I worked with last week said: all the good kids and the simple cases are seen by their family practioners (gen dents), we get the brats!

Please read carefully before you start squirting out your own stuff out of that discolored sponge 😀 . At no time did I use the word average. These are the stats for suburbia based well established practices.

All things being equal, pedo is not really a rain maker like ortho or endo. Sjdent, just because your boyfriend has a pedo cert or MS does not mean he is automatically going to make a lot more than you (not that there is anything wrong with that). As a gen dent you can take so many CDE certs that can increase your income to almost that of any other specialist. Our school has introduced this implant course as part of Pros (which so far has been useless) so that we can do implants on the floor either as replacements teeth, fixed abutments or denture abutments... nonetheless, they guy from the company was telling me about their 2month week end course that they offer which trains gendents to place and restore implants... if you are proficient in this, depending on where you practice that is atleast $1000 per case. Cosmetics is obviously another money making arena for generalists along with the new craze for adult ortho (invisilign etc.)

Bottom line, it all depends on how you run/build your practice.

i know of one pedo making about 95K first year out of residency, in the midwest.

i know of another pedo making 170K first year out of residency, in the southeast.

location location location. Other thing, unlike medicine, the income of dental business is not dependent on the state, rather "communities" as the census bureau groups them.
