Just wondering how much do you residents out there make moonlighting??

my average

Daily income- about 1500
# of pt's- about 15-19
specilty-omfs
Location-California

what are you're stats? I figure it would be much better in other parts of the country unfortunately I only work 2-3 times per month...just enough to get by in med school

On average, how many teeth do you take out a day? What percentage are 3rd molars? It seems $1500 is a little low if you are seeing 15-19 pts and are only doing 3rds.

That's mostly medical pts...maybe see 7-8 sets in a day...the rest apicos...bombed out teeth etc. My days are from 9am to 2pm for the practice I am reffering to.
another practice...make about the same...but only see 7-10 pts

What is moonlighting?
moonlighting is what we do in residency to make money on the side...when we have time of course 🙂

Has anyone else done the math in their heads here? ~$45,000/yr working one or two weekends a month?!!!! 😱

yeah it seems lucrative. then again i think a lot of dentistry salaries are lucrative. but if you can make even half that on the side, that's enough to live off of... then you can start paying the big ol' debts back once you start making $200,000/yr after residency is completed.

yeah I know...it's alot of money but some residents I know are making 70-80k a year moonlighting.

If I were willing to go a little further out of the metro area for work I think I could make 2500 a day...but I don't think I want to drive that far.

Just for everybody out there wondering what people make working at clinics "western dental, bright now dental, etc.) when they get out. I got a friends working there

Ortho: about 1300 per day ( see about 80 patients)
OMFS: 2000 base per day and if you produce more closer to 3000 per day 👍

It's kinda crazy .....guys that just got out from my program are working 6 days a week at clinics...do the math

what program are you in? I want to make sure it is on my apply list. Moonlighting is a big 👍 for me to consider a residency. We should compile a list to see what programs the residents moonlight for us current applicants.
As I know Louisville 👍 , Parkland 👍 , UF 👎 , UPenn 👎

Thats amazing!! But is that NET income meaning what they take home? I say this because I hear so much discrepancy on threads on income and wonder whether it includes what they actually take home after other expences such as overhead/taxes/rent/etc...I know that this is a bit different since you are a resident, so how exactly do you go about "moonlighting" when ur a resident?? I am very curious, Thanks.

That is before taxes...everybodies gotta pay taxes...but since you are technically an independant contractor there is no overhead....except travel and sometimes you gotta buy instruments around a couple thousand bucks

Most of the jobs are hand me downs from other residents and are local offices...but if you feel confident enough you can try working in clinic type offices...but they have way more patients but still managable if you can work multiple rooms at once....numb, numb, numb....extract, extract, extract

But who is responsible for you since you are still not done with the residency? Is it because you are a dentist you can do extractions without a supervisor? I guess I am confused as to why someone would want to pawn off bread and butter work to someone else???

Yes I am a lisenced and insured dentist...there are so many general dentists doing full bony exts in california...in fact there are people who just moonlight...not oral surgery residents, not oral surgeons...or anything just a liscenced dentist doing extractions all day in california....I know this takes away from oral surgery as a whole but I only do it to make ends meet..not to drive a new car.

bread and butter yes...but these are clinics with massive amounts of patients that choose to maintain a profit from their extractions as opposed to refferal to an OMFS....Sadly that is the norm where I am from

Are these complex bony extractions you are doing? like impactions or surgicals or just plain using the hall drill?

I am thinking of OS as a specialty (4yr) and was wondering if I would be able to moonlight after PGY1.

Are you saying that you ONLY break even in your practice by moonlighting??? Doesn't performing regular procedures give you plenty more than breaking even?

Hi,
I'm a second year Oral Surgery resident and I want to moonlight.
Can anyone provide me with advice on moonlighting?

Who should I talk to - general practicioners or oral surgeons?
What kind of work do you do when you moonlight - extractions, 3rds, anything else?
Should I buy my equipment? How much does it cost?
How much percent do you earn? How much is the insurance? What about taxes?

Can anyone provide any creative ideas of other jobs that surgical residents can do?

Thank you very much!
👍

Posting in a historical thread wooo!

Bump guy, this thread is over 2 years old. Check the dates next time, most of these people are probably long gone.
