For those who are currently taking premed classes. I probably average around 6-7 hours per night, often getting less during the week and a lot more (~10hr/night) on weekends. Prying myself out of bed on just a few hours of sleep is often the toughest part of my day.

All the time.

I probably average 10+ hours per night (actually during the day is when I do most of my sleep. Usually from about 2am till Noon or maybe 1pm

I go to bed at around 11 and wake up at 7:30...so 8 and a half. This is pretty consistent between weekends and weekdays because I'll work in lab on the weekends at 9:00 instead of class.

Say what? Are you taking ALL of your Premed classes at once? Im taking two of mine plus calc and history and I still get as much sleep as I need, ( go to sleep around 10pm wake up at 6:00-6:30 am..

You're not in med school... yet brother/sister

I don't sleep, I wait... generally for 7-10 hours per night.

6-8 hours on the weekday is pretty typical for me. When I was taking premed classes I didn't have the work ethics I do now, so probably 10-12 hours a day while skipping all of my morning classes?

6 hours on weekdays, 7-7:30 on weekends, and 4-5 hours during exam week.

I get different amounts of sleep every night, varying from like 3 to 12 at the extremes with an all-nighter or two each semester, averaging around 6. I know how unhealthy it is, and I have about 2 months more of it before I normalize it in the summer, ha.

I love sleep. Its a priority. So I sleep about 7-8.5 hours a night. However, I do wake up several times so its not always that restful. Even when I'm studying and staying up later than normal, the least I get is probably 5 hours. Although I have 5 exams over an 8 day period coming up... so this might change drastically. (72 days until graduation woo hoo)

High school senior here, I sleep 7-7.5 hours weekdays. 8-11 hours on the weekend.

Mine is about the average when compared to other posts. I get around 6-8 hours usually; however 6-7 would probably be closer to the average.

6~7hr on regular school days
4hr on test days (7 if i dont cram)
10~15hr on non-school days

I deliver babies in Africa for my 7-10 hours a night. You have been outgunned.

:laugh::laugh::laugh: 👍

I average about 6 a night. MWF nights I get about 8, because I don't have morning classes on T/TH

I can't go to sleep before 12:00 am because I need to see the daily woot. I wake around 8, so I guess around 8 hours a day.

Its hard to tell...time spent officially in la-la land? probably around 7.5 on average.

Time spent being alert and paying attention each day?...maybe 2-2.5.

One could argue that I am hybernating for close to 12 hrs a day, on stand-by for another 8, in blank-stare mode another 1.5 and actually actively participating for 2.5.

I had it so great in highschool. My school did not start until 9, so I would sleep about 7 hours a night and then 2 hours during study hall/yearbook.

I now sleep about 10 hours a day.

Not very much at all this semester with MCAT class and all my other activities....maybe 4-6 hours on weeknights. I try to catch up on weekends so I get about 9 Fri/Sat night. I can't wait until this semester is over🙁 The other day I accidentally turned in my to-do list (which for some reason constantly has items added to it but never a noticeable amount removed) instead of my calculations for my lab report! Found my lab calculations a few hours later & wondered where my to do list had gone......Coffee is my friend👍

Something like 6 or 7 hours a day, if I'm lucky.

I really hope anyone isn't losing sleep every night due to the premed curriculum, its not that difficult.

Ahhh what a great topic.

I've been done with the pre-med stuff since last semester - so now I'm only taking upper level Bio classes for my major. It's resulted in a completely ass-backwards sleep cycle, and it's really bad. For example, right now it's 2:30 AM, and I'm WIDE AWAKE. Yesterday, I went to sleep at like 10AM and slept until 6PM. I've been trying to re-normalize for a while now to no avail.

So, averaged over the last couple months, I'd say I get about 6 hours average a day - but that's average. It differs all the time.

If I wanted to, I could sleep for a LONG TIME. Not too long ago I went to bed on a Friday night at like 4 AM, and got out of bed on Saturday at like 5:30PM...that's pretty gross. I think my record is like 16 hours.

I apparently don't sleep nearly enough..

5 hours a night weekdays and 12 hrs weekend 😀

Same, stupid 1.5 hour commute each way for me :/

Can't wait to not have huge travel times in college.

Ever since about junior year of ugrad I have averaged around 5 hours a night... sometimes less... rarely more. And yes I do look like a basset hound with the huge, dark rings under my eyes...

I usually get 7.5-8 hours of sleep on weekdays and around 10 hours on weekends. No matter what I'm doing, I DO NOT compromise anything for sleep. I've had numerous occasions where I had midterms, simply studied throughout the day and still managed to get my regular amount of sleep and A's on the midterms.

But then again, I guess there's the whole thing where I don't have a job. So I guess that accounts for a lot.

I sleep more in school than when I work full-time. So doing pre-reqs, I was sleeping min. 8 hours. Now that I'm done and I work at 4am M-F, I sleep about 6 hours a night and am good with that. Sleep in on the weekends 🙂

Really depends on the day- I have to leave at 7am for my 8am classes two days a week so the night before those usually only 4-5 hours... I tend to skip that class and sleep in though...

Other nights usually 8 hours

I hate morning classes and am a night owl so usually bedtime is around 1-2am... then I sleep as late as I can depending on what I have to do that day.

Next year I am not sure what I will do in med school- my initial thought is to go to class 1-3 days a week and sleep late the other two unless I am not familiar with the topic or am struggling with a concept.

If I don't get at least 9 hours a night, I need a nap.
I am so screwed for residency.

Also, the pre-med curriculum doesn't cut into my excessive sleeping all that much, if at all. It's all about managing my time around my sleep. If i start studying 1-2 weeks in advance, I only have to do about an hour and a half a day, thus, no cramming, thus, no lost sleep, spreading it out helps with retention, thus, A's. Undergrad is easy.

I average about 7-8 hours each weeknight when I don't have a major test the next day and about 6 hours the nights before tests. Weekends I get 8-10.

I sleep more now (senior year) than I ever did as a freshman. Depending on the day 8-10 Hours, with the usual exceptions...test days, party nights, etc.

Depends really on the day of the week. Since I work as a closer, on the days I work I'm up until at least 2:30AM, so I have to split up my sleep into 3-4 hour mini-sleeps throughout the day. I try to get at least 8 hours of sleep.

Slept ~5 hours a night before I realized how pointless it was. Now I sleep ~7 hours on normal days and ~8 hours the night before a test.

hahahahaha 👍👍

i sleep 8 hours every night. at least. and this was true 90% of the time in college as well. what can i say, i'm super neurotic about scheduling my life and i love me my sleep 😉

(for the record, i sleep like the dead and can easily pass out from 12am-2pm on a weekend. i should list it in the "special skills" section of my resume.)

sleep at 3 am to 11-12 am on regular days

exams days 4-5 hours

I normally go to sleep around 12am or 1am and get up at 5am to go to work and class. So about 4-5 hours a night and then I take a 2 hour nap normally durring the day after classes. So on average 5-7 hours. :]
I do occasionally go 24-31 hours without sleep and that's murder... 😛

acutally i heard 1 hour during the day = 2 at night.

i am currently sick so 10 hours a day 😀 but i don't think it's a realistic estimation for pre-meds

Really? 1 hour of sleep durring the day = 2 hours of sleep at night?

Wow, you guys are complaining at not sleeping enough despite getting 10 hours of sleep? 😆

Pansies.

When I was a med student I got so used to sleeping just 4 hours that it has forever affected my body like a sort of scar. On vacations if I start sleeping 8 hours on a regular basis I start getting insomnia, my body now needs just 6 hours of sleep!

I sometimes pulled all-nighters as a med student too. Now as an intern, on my first rotation the most I slept was 6 hours, the least was 2 1/2 hours, average 4 hours. On my new rotation I still don't know how much I'll sleep. Things are pretty calm these past few days, so if I'm luckily I might sleep 6 at the best with good chances of 4 hours!! As long as I get 4 hours I'm good. 🙂 At the worst I might just get 20 minutes..

Actually as a student, once I slept just 20 minutes on a night shift. I didn't look quite perky the next day.

Get ready.

you know, people told me many (less dramatic) versions of this before i started college. and check me out-- i got through four years of a biochem major without ever pulling an all nighter, drinking coffee, or getting less than 4 hours of sleep (the number of times i got less than 6 hours i can count on one hand).

so... good for you. you've pushed yourself to the brink during med school and have probably gotten a lot out of it. but your posting this makes me feel like you need us to validate your martyr status, which i'm not gonna do. we get it, med school and residency are hard. But i see no reason to come into a thread in the pre-allo forum and call us pansies because we haven't gotten there yet.
