My school (and others I presume) suggest 3 hours of studying outside of class per credit hour in class per week. For a 12 credit load that's 36 hours! How many of you actually meet this demand with volunteering, working and shadowing?

I know I don't. Most don't. So where is the middle ground? Is 15 hours acceptable? Maybe it depends on the student?

I think it depends on the student. I barely studied and did fine, while others study non-stop.

I did MAYBE 2-3 hours a night during the week (nothing on the weekends). When I had an exam coming up, I bumped that up to 4-5 hours a day for a couple of days leading up to the exam. I've heard the 3 hours per credit advice and found that didn't apply to me and it may not to you either.

1 hour/gen ed and 3 hours/science test.

Depends on the student, the subject, the professor, and the school. Too many variables to know what's "average", but certainly there comes a point where there's just too much studying for it to be reasonable anywhere.

I only studied material the day before to a few days before my tests and did fine, but my slack study habits showed in my GPA. You really just have to test how much you need and what type of studying you need. Using the right study style for you reduces the amount you need to study. Obviously, the more studying and more consistent studying the better, but 36 hours does seem a little ridiculous.

If you have time management like a boss...... it wouldnt matter.......

Im a very independent person and I have literally STOP hanging out with friends, which is why I dont have any now 🙂 I realized the friends I had slowed me down and it wasnt healthy to my GPA.

I never studied unless I had to. Which meant that I would do the homework the night before it was due and studying for exams two days before. I got through undergrad with a 3.65 and got accepted to a medical school.

It's different for everyone. I know people who studied 8 hours a day, every day and got the same grades as me.

I can't tell if you are being serious or being funny...i hope being funny

We talkin' 'OMFG, I haven't studied for 2 months and the test is next Monday!' kinda weeks or normal weeks here? 😎

I've never been much of the studying type but I'm looking at graduating with a solid GPA. I'm just worried about developing good study habits in medical school this coming fall. :scared:

Yup. I maybe study 1 hour for each credit a week if you average out over the quarter. I learn concepts extremely quickly, so I only really need to study facts outside of class. When I'm not in any heavily fact-based classes, I have to study even less.

Honestly if I didn't have to read the book for certain classes I'd probably average around 5-6 hours a week.
