I'm a freshman so I maybe being totally paranoid...
I'm really not good at math, but I've managed to get
a B+ on the first sem of my calc seq. But I've had a lot of
problem with the second sem...

I have no idea why I did badly and I'm not going to make excuses, but
my professor says I'm probably going to end up with a C+ and maybe a
C if I mess up badly on the final.

My other courses are going very good, A's and a possible B in orgo.

My pre-med advisor tells me not to worry about it especially it's freshman year and everything and to make sure not to get another C ever if I want chance at a top med schools.

It's just that I'm worried about my science gpa now (A- in inorg chem, B+ in Calc 1, B or B+ in orgo, and of course a C or a C+ in Calc 2). Granted it's freshman year, but i know how hard it is to get into a med school and i'm just worried I guess.

I guess withdrawal is not an option (med schools don't like Ws, right?)

so...
how much is this going to hurt me?

thanks

It's going to hurt worse than a B but better than a D

but honestly, if you are a freshmen.... stop worrying. You got years to improve. And med schools do look at trends in improvement.

dood, calculate the hours it takes to graduate you have left and figure in the grades you've made. Make your own judgements based on what classes you have yet to take.

Don't worry about it...I had the same grades in Calculus...Just make sure to do well in your other science courses and you will be fine...You've still got plenty of time...

Got a C+ frosh year in gen bio. currently at a top tier med school. grades are important, but they are definitely not everything.

u are screwed. a B AND a C??? No one can ever get into med school with a B and a C!

All jokes aside, you are fine. It's better screwing up in fresh year than soph year. I had a nice fresh year, and totally f'd up second year

thanks so much
that makes me feel better.

I wanted to hear from other pre-med or current med school students with
similar experiences so i'm very grateful.

I never understand these sorts of questions.... Its not like you can go back and change your grade or anything

Just do your best from here on out... Even if it does hurt your chances of med school, are you just going give up now? And this should make you feel better, getting a C or D should only motivate you to get all A's and B's in the future

1) Summate the Credits X Grade Point (ie a 2.000 for a C) for each class

2) Divide the total by your total credits.

This is your GPA. Now calculate it without the class you got a C in. Voila, that is the quantified effect of a C.

You're not screwed. Just calculate how many units you have by the time of application and make sure it implies that your GPA is 3.7+. You're going to have to make some assumptions though, like getting A's from here on out.

I also got a C in calculus in college ... I was actually asked about it during one or two interviews. Basically, I explained myself and said that I let myself be overwhelmed in that class because I wasn't enthusiastic about vector calculus (who is?) and so I didn't study as hard as I should have. I assured them that it would not happen in med school because the subject matter is much more interesting and relevant to me (and I pointed out that I had maintained good grades in classes like biochemistry, which WERE interesting to me). I think that it wasn't too big of a deal and their concern was just to make sure that I could handle the academic demands of med school.

I think that as long as you maintain a good GPA overall, your one C won't hurt you. Plus, an upward trend in your college GPA is a positive thing.

just counted my transcript. i had 14 Cs and still made it into a school this year. i averaged a 3.8 my last 3 years though.

Depends where you stick it...

as much as big *** Deebo would.😛

Don't get ahead of yourself here. Your prof said you'd get a C/C+ IF you mess up on your final...if you do well, I presume you'd get some sort of B. So don't panic before the cards are down. Even if you do get a C, it's not the end of the world, just don't make a habit of it.
