So now that we are all well into interview season, I thought it might be fun to compare the number of miles we have driven these past few months for interviews. Coming home from one and sick of driving got me curious about the mileage so I've added them up over the 10 I have been on (mapquest starting city to interview city). I've applied exclusively in the SE and am quasi centrally located meaning that I can only justify flying to 2 of them thus a fair bit of driving. I'm sure there are people out there who cream me with mileage and was wondering where I stood. Rules for the game if anyone is interested in participating is total mileage driven (flown doesn't count b/c it's passive but driving once in the destination does). Feel free to include projected, number of interviews, or anything else you feel is pertinent. For an added bonus times pulled over vs tickets given during interview drives. I'm at 3 and 1.

Total Mileage to date: 5927
# interviews over: 10
Porjected total: 7300 (one long haul plus some minor post flight travel)
Times pulled/tickets recieved: 3/1

I was beginning to think I was the only one driving to all my interviews...

Total Mileage to date: 9982
# interviews over: 12
Projected total: 10668 if I keep this one last interview...
Times pulled/tickets received: 1/0. This po-po pulled me over in podunk at 2am to "see if [I was] going to make it." I was trying to make it home in time to get some sleep before rounds in the morning so I was pretty pissed. Pretty surprised I didn't get pulled over more often. Combination of speed limit+9 on cruise control and a radar works wonders.

My biggest trip when I interviewed was driving a rental car (a mustang I believe) from Grand Rapids Michigan to Portland Maine. I think I hit grand rapids, Kalamazoo, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, and Maine on that trip. I had one day off that I used to drive onto Manhattan. That was stupid.

10K club here too. Easy. Too lazy to project out but could be much much higher.

4008 miles (actual, based on odometer readings). That was one trip, 5 interviews in one region. The rest of my interviews are scattered enough geographically that I need to fly to them.

Just curious but what is your cut off for driving vs flying? Also do you mind sharing the number of interviews that is over? I knew I was going to be outmartyred For me it's ~10 hours after that the cost of gas + the hassle of driving that long+ wear and tear on my car > the cost of the flight. I know there are some people out there who drive to basically everything. Met a guy who have driven from Little Rock to Greenville, NC which is close to 1000 miles.

Dont really have a strict cut-off per se. There are a couple straight 11 - 12 hour drives sure. Also, a few trips which may be 6 hours to interview A, then 4 hours to interview B, 5 hours to interview C and then 8 hours home. Flying is a hassle, no matter how you cut it. I like the freedom driving affords, plus, I have a nice car that is a pleasure to drive. I bought it to drive it, not to avoid driving it in hopes of higher resale down the road. I hear applicants complaining all the time about 4 hour drives, etc...with audiobooks, Tedtalks, podcasts, good music, etc. Driving is...gasp...almost enjoyable. But, I'm a bit of an explorer by nature so maybe N = 1.

+1.

I can drive from here to Mars and only stop for gas/food/pissbreak.

The wifey needs 2mg Ativan Q 2h for any drive over 2 hours.

I love to drive too, and would drive to all my interviews if feasible, but sometimes time constraints dictate otherwise. All the interviews I'm flying to would be 12+ hours each way to drive.
