Some schools have a 23 cut off, meaning they won't send you a secondary if it is lower than 23. But this can sometimes be appealed. With such a great GPA (assuming great ECs, and decent MCAT) then you should have no problem getting into most DO schools ...

I've known people with 21 that got in. With that exception GPA, it is certainly possible.

I wouldn't recommend shooting for a low score, however.

The overall score isn't the most important thing, however. You want to shoot for a minimum of 7-8 in each section.

Just out of curiosity, what WAS your score? If you just sat for it in August, then stop psyching yourself out. There's not a thing you can do about it until October. Focus on those secondaries.

I took the MCAT this month. i think i will get 20 or 21. this why i am worry.

You are most likely in a Post-MCAT panic.

Let a bit of time pass. Most people find that those initial feeling after test day are way off.

Good luck.

Most likely not a native speaker.

But we "understood your meaning." 😀

I think I did bad in verbal (3 or 4 ) and may be 8 or 9 in bio and phs.

Hi,

Just wondering, what schools were the people that you knew who scored a 21 get into? thanks.

Sorry to take from the OP but I am in a similar situation.

I'm having trouble if I should apply to DO school or just go with the Foreign Schools. I have a pretty good GPA (3.76) and great ECs, LORs, etc. BUT my MCAT sucks. I made a 19 when I took it in April of 03 and I just retook last weekend and am not sure I did any better. My practice tests were in the 22-24 range but I feel like I did worse on the test. I can pretty much gauge where I stand after the section (with exception to verbal). There has been posts on here that show people can get in with a low 20 and even a 19 (accordign to mdprofiles) but I'm just wondering is it worth it to apply. I also will most likely not have a DO letter so that does exclude some schools. I have shadowed a DO but didn't think long enough to request a letter. I may be able to get one in the next couple of months. I see a school like NYCOM has an avg of about 23 something so it might be possible to get in there but what do you guys think, apply to DO or just apply to Foreign schools.

Thanks for your help guys. I am still suffering from MCAT blues.

NUKID,
I think you definitely raised you score so don't fret, but if you did not I would apply anyway. Do you have a good shot? I really can't answer that question because I am not an adcom member BUT if I had to bet I would say you would have a difficult time. You need to try to break the 23 range to feel comfortable. Good Luck! 😉

MCAT blues happens to the best of us. You should check the MCAT forums for others with similar feelings (I visit them daily).

Whether to apply and attend medical school outside or inside the US is only up to you. Personally, I would much rather attend a DO school inside the US, versus attending a foreign medical program. Check the forums for posts on this topic because I know it has been covered many times.

I have the same GPA as you with a not so hot MCAT score (a 22) and I'm applying with my score. Maybe I am a bit too optimistic but I honestly believe that the adcoms will ultimately look at the total package. If I don't get in, I will retake the MCAT and reapply.

I do know for sure of a current 4th year med student at LECOM who got in with a 20. I dont know if they changed their requirements or not but when I emailed them before I sent my application they said that the cut off score is a 21. If you don't score higher than that, I think it would be worth calling them and ask them with that good of a GPA.

I feel for the non-native English speakers. It must make the verbal quite brutal. But, it's that way by design.

Hopefully, you can overcome this disadvantage by strengthening the other areas. Or, really work on reading, and practicing verbal reasoning.
