I was wondering how much research experience is really required to apply for programs. I have worked in two separate labs but didn't do much more than grunt work. I think it was mostly because I wasn't happy with the type of work that I was doing that I didn't really progress or take initiative. I think I'm competent enough to talk about research I would be interested in but I'm not sure if I would even be screened out before I can explain myself.

I can only speak from my experience being in a combined MD/MPH program and not as an adcom, but I doubt it is any more important than for MD, in fact I would guess it is slightly less important (though still valuable). There are people in my class with lots of research experience and people with none. It's more important to show a public health interest. This could be through public health related research, but a lot of us have non-research work experience or just undergrad coursework that demonstrates this interest.
