Hello

I feel like the weakest portion of my resume is my shadowing and volunteering. i have exponentially less shadowing and volunteering when compared to my premed peers due to how research heavy my resume is. As a result, I only have around 40 hours of shadowing and like only one summer of volunteering (condensed, not even spread out over a long period of time).

Would this be detrimental?

Shadow a variety of physicians. Something in the 50+ hour range is ideal.

Oh snap! You said the one thing that pisses people off on this board: how much volunteering is enough?

The first mistake is condensed volunteering. This supposedly arbitrarily makes ADCOMs think that you are a "box-checker," and only did it to fulfill the requirement. If you do thisclose to filling out applications, it can bite you in the butt... ADCOMs like to see a spread out commitment over time, so it looks like people at least pretend to care about others. However, people get in (not the ones on SDN) with 100-150 hours. I suggest that volunteering is at least in progress when filling out your app, it will look better.

And I'm preparing to get...

It will be detrimental. Get some volunteering asap, especially clinical volunteering. Keep the activity up while applying (and add some non-clinical if you have the interest/time). A few hours a week doing something is all that is really necessary. Try to choose something that interests you as well because that will help you enjoy it more and it will come out in applications.
