This question is more specifically aimed at 1st year students at other schools, but any year is welcome to answer.

How much time per week do you get to practice your procedures for primary eye care or the equivalently named class?

At my school we get 2 hours of class time per week for PEC 1 and any other time we want to use the lab to practice there has to be a 3rd year student present. Supposedly we are waiting on cameras to be installed in the lab so we can go in whenever we want. My question is when can you use the lab and if so what are the hours?

Is your school/lab open on Saturdays? Our school lab is "open" during the same hours the clinic is from 8-5 M-F. My school is completely closed on Saturdays and open on Sundays for anyone to use the lab. Definitely lots of competition with 2nd and 3rd years for the lab then, however.

Last semester our lab was 2 hours a week and this semester it's 3 hours a week. We have a lab for first years and another for upperclassmen so we don't usually have to fight over space outside of lab hours unless we all happen to have a practical coming up. Our lab is open the same hours as the library, so I THINK it's open til 10 or 11 weeknights and then Saturday from 12-6, Sunday from 1-10.

At ICO, we typically have optometry lab 3 hrs/week, plus time spent finishing homework assignments. Our pre-clinic lab is open 7 days a week usually starting at 7-9am and closing between 10-midnight. We are free to use it anytime it is open. Our pre-clinic lab was just completely remodeled this past winter and it is amazing. One lab has 18 lanes and the other has 20 lanes (i think).

at PCO we have class time for 2 hours a week, but they give us night assignments that force us to come in outside of that time. Basically you can practice anytime during the week as long as there is no class in there from 9-5, then when the TAs are there, which is usually 6-9 weekdays and then we have weekend hours on saturday and sunday when the TAs are there. The TAs don't always have to be present, however if you want to practice with an unknown pair of glasses, they have to unlock the cabinet so that no one walks away with any of the donated sexy glasses we use.

Compared to your school, PCO is very nice than. The labs open when the school is open and closes around 11pm. It's open on weekends too all day. I don't think I've ever went when it was closed. Only 1st and 2nd yrs use the lab. 3rd yrs don't use it since we are in clinic already.

Thanks for the input, pretty much what I assumed but it was good to get confirmation.

we usually have 3 hours of procedural lab, and it's up to the students to decide how much time to practice, since we have assessments almost every week, so that means we are almost always in lab when we are not in lecture. we 1st yrs only have to share space in lab with 2nd yrs, and 3rd yrs are on clinic floor seeing pts so they don't use the practice lab. We can go into lab anytime as long as there's no class, weekends too...usually getting a station is not too much of a problem if you get there early.
