Hello folks,

Since SDN has been so helpful for me, I come to SDN again with another question.

I am planning on doing an SMP program to help my relatively low undergrad GPA (3.4). I am taking my MCAT in April, and the results won't be available until May, obviously. So my question is this, I know everyone is recommending that I apply to the SMPs early, but I won't be able to until the MCAT score comes in, so how much will me applying in May hurt me? I am looking on here and seeing that people are already getting accepted into this program, and I am happy for them, but it is worrying me as to how much less likely it is for me to get in. Any advice or recommendations?

Thanks as always.

It'll hurt you. The best programs fill up early. Nevertheless, I got into a decent SMP program and my application was finalized on June 30. I had the same GPA as you, and a 36 MCAT.

With such a high MCAT how much you needed an SMP?! Thats an awesome score.

If you don't mind me asking, what program did you get into. Thanks.

i'm in the same boat, I contacted one of the program directors and he said he shouldn't hurt me too much, I hope he's not just saying that but I'm trying not to worry about it for now.

I hope thats the case. I am planning on starting a barrage of calls on Monday and Tuesday to find out. I'll let you know what I find out.

Cool, yeah, try to keep us posted swedish

So Georgetown said, good luck, but it will be a large disadvantage for you. So, thats bad news.

EVMS application would close before the MCAT scores are released and so its Boston. So those two are out.

Tufts said it shouldn't be a problem, but told me to apply now and they will review the application, and finalize it when the MCAT score comes in. They were really nice and supportive on the phone btw.

Tulane Requires me to be waitlisted at a med school and I am not, so thats out.

Temple is kind of weird, you must not have taken the MCAT, you must not have taken more then two premed classes in college so I can't apply to this, I would think most people here can't unless they are non-trad.

USF application closes in March 1, so thats out too

Drexel IMS and DPMS, very helpful lady on the phone. She said IMS shouldn't be a problem at all. DPMS she said that it will be cutting it close, they need the MCAT score to be release May 13th or earlier, so hopefully it is. She said with the DPMS they do understand about the April thing, and they really put that into consideration, so it should be that big of a deal as long as the score is received before thats date.

VCU I am not interested in at all, because I have only heard bad stories about their program.

UMDNJ Newark said they get a lot of applications towards the end and if you have a strong application it should not be a big issue.

Oh, and I left a message for Toledo, NYMC, and RFU. Ill let you know when I get a call from them.

RFU says no big deal. They always have seats open in May... App is due sometime in June

Which april test date are you planning on taking?

Hey swed,
I think your mistaken on Boston. The one you want doesn't have a deadline. All other masters at BU have a deadline on march 31st though. (not important xD)

Pretty sure your mistaken on Temple too.
There is a basic core which you are mentioning (for career changers) and there is the advanced core, which I think takes MCAT scores and is due on 6/1 (at least last year)

Please double check and I think you will get in to a lot of places with your 3.4 as long as you get a decent MCAT score! 🙂

Hey man, thanks a lot. I wil call them tomorrow and see what they have to say and double check. Thanks again.

You can take the GRE (which is a lot easier to wing) for Tufts (or at least you could 2 years ago) if you want to get the app in sooner.

are you applying for 2010? So SMPs do not work like med school in that you have to get ur MCATs done a year before the program starts right? For example if I want to get into an SMP in June 2011, can I take the MCAT in Sept, or Oct?
(sorry to highjack the thread)

Yes, but I don't want to stop studying for the MCAT to take a different exam...

They all have different due dates. If you take it Sept or Oct of 2010, you are set for 2011.
