Okay. So I know I won't really be able to narrow down anything until I'm further into the process, but right now I'm totally obsessive and want to find out anything I possibly can 😛

Lived on Long Island in NY the first 18 years of life. My mom's side of the family still lives there. I'd love to go to a NY school (more specifically NYC/LI because my husband is in finance and obviously NYC would therefore be ideal). At the same time, I'm also extremely interested in south FL schools because my parents will likely be moving there at least part-time in the next few years (and therefore will be around for babies and what not), and south FL also happens to be a great place for my husband to find employment.

I did a couple years of undergrad in Charleston, SC and my dad's side of the family still lives there. I lived there from ages 18-24. Then hubby and I moved to Park City, UT to basically do nothing but enjoy the outdoors and be chefs (he was still a chef at the time also). We lived there for 4 years.

Now we're back in his hometown, Kansas City. I'm completing my undergrad degree at UMKC. I will be applying to KU and UMKC (if I don't, and his parents find out, they will be pretty upset - us leaving will be hard enough on them as it is) but I want nothing more than to get out of the center of the country. And when we have kids I want my family to be close, because free childcare (and I love them dearly 😀).

So, based on my ties with each state, and assuming I end up with average stats (I currently have a 4.0 but it's just the beginning and I have a lot going on, have to be realistic) could anyone point me toward schools that would prefer applicants with my state-ties? We also need to live somewhere that has a pretty substantial financial industry, because we'd like to be able to pay for all this and have minimal debt.

I'm currently interested in the following schools, more or less in order of preference:

Miami
FAU
FIU
Nova Southeastern

Hofstra
Downstate

U. Utah
Touro (NYC)
NYIT

MUSC

Utah
KU
UMKC

I obviously didn't include top-tier NYC schools because I don't know if that would be realistic at the moment. They would be up there at the top of the NY section. I included DO schools because I can't rule them out yet.

If it matters at all, I'm really interested in both Radiology and Dermatology (yeah, I know they are very different and very competitive!)

Thank you to anyone who made it through this and feels compelled to respond!!!

Are you living on the Kansas or Missouri side of the stateline in KC? Have you established residency?

Particularly among the state schools you've listed, where you have established residency is where you will have the best shot. Especially if it's Kansas or Missouri where there are significant mandates to take in-state students.

In the end, keep in mind that your goal is to be an MD, not a graduate of XYZ medical school. Apply broadly, interview where you get invites, and then consider the social/family implications of your acceptances.

Where you should apply is based largely on state of residence, overall and science GPAs, MCAT score, and ECs. Do you have that information now or are you still completing prerequisites/deciding if this is the path for you?

I live on the Kansas side but attend a Missouri state school. We are maintaining Kansas residency in case I go to KU. For undergrad the schools in KC are pretty lenient with tuition for “in-state”, they have something called “metro rate” but I don’t know that it’s the same for medical school

I’m still completing prerequisites. I really just wanted to know if there are any other schools I should consider based on my state ties, assuming an average applicant

In SUNY schools, if you have graduated from HS in NY, for admissions purposes you are can be considered a state resident

This is good to know, I did graduate from HS in NY.

I grew up on the Kansas side, not sure the metro rate counts for medical school.

KU likely will be your absolute best chance for an acceptance when you get around to applying - probably by a wide margin. State resident in a state that places a huge priority on in-state status without any of the conjecture of where you graduated HS, where your closest family ties are, or any place you've had connections to in the past. Doesn't mean you won't get accepted elsewhere, just that the odds will be best at KU...Just hope you don't get sent to Wichita when you actually get accepted!
