Hey, I know there have been other threads like this but I was hoping to get some personal responses.

How old are you guys going to be when you start your first year of medical school?

I know I shouldn't be thinking about this because it shouldn't matter but I CAN'T stop thinking about it: how my friends are already in their second or third years or finishing up grad school and how I'm still working on pre-reqs and have to apply next year to get in for the year after that.

I'll be about 25-26 when I finally go and then I guess, 34-35 when I;m done residency. I'm so afraid of feeling old and left out. How old is everyone else going to be?

28 here, you are a youngin'

I will be 33 (a very famous number in Boston) when I start school.....in fact 2 months after I hopefully start I will turn 34.

If I decide to go through with it (I really want to, but some aspects of managed care have given me pause; i.e., I'm not going to invest 8-10 years of my life and come out with $120K+ in debt and making $80K. No; not for my own sake, but for my future family's sake), I'll be either 28 or 29 when I begin med school, depending on if I decide to take the extra year to bolster my application with some added EC's and supplemental courses (biochem, physics in medicine, medical ethics etc.).

And, like you, the age thing really upsets me, because I wish I would've realized that I wanted to do this 5 years ago. If I was only 29 or 30 when I came out of residency as a pediatrician, I would definitely do it, even if the money wasn't that great, because you'd have time to change course or get another degree to supplement it if necessary (JD, MBA etc.). But for me, the thought of being 36 or 37 (or, worse, 38-39 if I decide on a different specialty) is downright scary, particularly since nobody in my family has any sort of money to help me out with. I'm addition, it'll take me until my mid-40's just to get out from under my debt. Scary indeed. Nevermind the "when will I start a family" issue. 🙁

I'll still probably just do it and hope that reform in the healthcare system is soon in coming. <crosses fingers> 😳

I'll be 25 when I start this fall. I've heard that 25 is the average age for starting med school.

Thanks guys for responding. 25-26 is the earliest age I can be to go to medical school.
I don't mind young medical school students posting here. In fact, I'd like to hear about who is going to medical school at a younger age.

I think its wonderful that people can do that (I had two friends who went right after their junior year in college) but I don't beleive I have the maturity/world experience to do it even now that I'm almost 23.

I'm 26. so we're in the same boat. we're young! we got our whole lives to be docs

Well I started when I was 12 but had to work on my Ph.D. when i was 14 because they thought I was too young for clinicals. So I should be 22 or 23 when I finish.

j/k, i will be 23 when I start.

I'll be 28 when I (hopefully) start next year. I knew I wanted to go to med school since high school but I took a few years off after undergrad and I'm so glad I did. I'm so much more mature now than I was at 22/23 and I know that's going to make a huge difference in my med school experience. I really feel like I'm going to appreciate the opportunity much more now and I think
I will be more successful than I would have a few years ago because I've finally got my priorities straight. I know I'll be older than most other students and I'll be 32 when I graduate, but for me, that's a good thing. The only thing I'm worried about is fitting in children into this plan, but I have faith that things will work themselves out.

I was 22 when I started, but will be 33 after all of residency/fellowship. 🙁

Ahhhh, Youth! You're all mere infants! I'm starting premed this fall. I'm 48. Which means I'll be at least 50 when I start med school, at least 54 when I start residency. And I've never been so excited about my life! Of course there are many reasons why I'm doing this now...one is that if I DON'T, in 6 years I'll still be 54, only I'll be doing the same dead-end job I'm doing now and barely making enough to get by. Our total family income is $50k, so even $80k sounds like a fortune to me. And I have no doubt as a doctor I'll be able to make a good bit more than that. Best of all, though, is that I'll finally be doing something that I love, something I know I was created for.

If I get in this coming up app selection time, I'll be 20 entering. I'm a youngin', but eager to proceed in medicine.

20 entering!? 😱 Jeez, how'd you swing that? Did you start college at 16 like my dad (skipped one grade plus a december birthday)? 😛 Best of luck. God, what I would give to somehow lop off 3-5 years... 🙁

I'll be 21 in May. Just in time to celebrate my matriculation with a drink!

I'll be 19, when I start this fall. Yes I'm a youngin' too...I'm definitely excited to start though! And I'm extremely grateful for all the opportunities I've been given 🙂

You guys who are 19 and 20-- how are you doing this? Don't you need to have received your bachelor's before you matriculate for med school? Are you guys not from the US? Just curious...

I'm from the US (NY actually) its just that I'm in one of those accelerated med programs so I only needed to do 2 years of undergrad. I dont actually get my BS until i finish two years of med school though. Hope that helps 🙂

I'm 39 now, just starting ugrad. Planning on taking a full 6 or 7 years to complete it. My oldest is starting his ugrad this year too, # 2 will start 2 years after #1 and I still have little ones at home, so full-time is out of the question. I'm also in no hurry because I want a stellar gpa and i'm trying to avoid debt! I'm hoping to start med school between the ages of 48 and 50. 🙂

I'm from NY as well, and I've never heard of such programs (though I've only gotten onto the "med track" in the past year or so, so I haven't done too much research). Would you mind if I asked what sort of program this is, and at what undergrad institution? I understand if you don't want to divulge that sort of info online. 🙂 I'm just curious, because had I known of such programs, I'd likely have partaken in them if that was an option (though it's likely that you had to enroll in such a program at the end of HS, no?).

Im in the US as well, hence Austin, TX. I'm a UT Austin graduate w/ BA in Bio. I went to TAMS... Texas Academy of Math and Science. (skip 2 years of high school and start college) That's it. Finished UT in 2 years.

I'm in the penn state/jefferson program. I've sent you a pm with the details. 🙂

I started last year when I was 35. The age range of the people that I know in my class is 20-45.

Started when I was 29.

I'll be turning 29 about 3 weeks before classes start.

Me too! I thought I was going to be older...and here in Texas, most people start young, so I thought I wouldn't be able to relate. I got accepted to med school for this fall and I would have started as 25, but since I'm deferring a year, I'll be 26 next fall when I start. Good to know that there are some mature people out there!! 😀
