I was wondering if anyone could shed light on the idea that it matters where you train geographically in the general location you want to ultimately practice.

In particular I am looking at the SoCal programs (Harbor, UCLA/OV, LAC USC, UCI, UCSD) Are these grads in a significantly better position for competetive markets in SD, OC, and LA than say out of state or even NorCal for that matter.

Of course, there is a lot more to how a match list is put together, but I was just wondering if all else being equal.

thanks

If only because you might get to know the people at those shops during state college meetings.
The best jobs aren't listed, it's who you know.
I haven't had an interview yet where they didn't offer me the job there or on the phone the next time I talked to them. I might not be interviewing at supercompetitive shops, but still, it's nice to be wanted.

i have nothing profound to contribute but just lurking in here to see if anyone else can shed some light on this as well

i'm also curious to know how much influence where you train for residency affects where you will be able to secure a job. i'm situated in the northeast but i do know i don't want to live up here forever (these winters are brutal) so i'd like to migrate somewhere warmed and am hoping that staying in the northeast for residency won't preclude me from securing a job elsewhere.
