Hello Everyone,
i wanted to enlighten everyone on how crazy my school is and how unfair it is!!!!! Let me start off by saying that I've had a really tough time in dental school. I failed many tests and had to take retests but always passed on teh second time around, thus never failing a class. i failed my part I boards and was suspended from school for 6 months until I passed them. Once i passed part I, I was reinstated as 4thyear. I began my fourth year and took part II boards, and failed them and then took the a second time and then passed them. I was up for graduation for this jan !!!! and have to come back next year to take this class. During thurd year t he president of my class was failing a course and they let him ass through onto fourth year when he should have failed and on top of that all my classmates cheated on tests in the basic sciences in first year!!!!!

I can't take the fact that there is a double standard and I really feel they should let me graduate athis point. They have made my life miserable for the last 4.5 years and I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No offense, but judging by the fact that you've had to remediate a number of courses on top of failing both parts of boards, I can't say that I really blame your school for wanting you to receive a little more training before sending you out into the real world of dentistry. That is a shame that so many of your classmates have cheated to pass, but that still does not excuse your poor performance in dental school. If I were you, I would work my butt off for the remainder of your time and learn as much as you can, and then thank God that you were able to finally get through dental school, despite your mishaps.

Have to agree with that completely. Sorry that you have had this much trouble, but the additional time is probably good for you.

If you attended NYU, you probably would have been kicked out a long time ago.

Getting into dental school is tought, however, passing classes, boards and license examinations are other challenges, and keeping your license is onother one.
Talk to your instructor, he/she is the only one to let you pass. No one esle can help you.

I know it must be horribly frustrating, but this would probably have been the case at my school as well. You can get by (or at least remediate without repeating any semesters) with a failing grade if the rest of your record is strong, but even if you DON'T fail any classes, a poor record overall (lots of Ds, remediated courses in the past, taking the boards twice) will keep you back for a year. It will suck to go back for a semester, but you'll have a good 30 years in practice after that.

I tend to agree with everyone. I know this post is to vent, but you've just decided to vent to some really overly opinionated people, like myself, who don't easily shut their mouths.

I think you are lucky, a lot of schools would have just chucked you aside without having gone through as much remediation as they did. Your school, despite whatever other flaws it may have, has decided to at least give you the chance to graduate. Cheating among your class is unfortunate, but unless you aren't telling us everything, they didn't cheat their way through Boards.

Anyways, count yourself lucky. A year back, I knew a guy who had only been in dental school for 6 months and had passed half of his classes, but he had had to remediate Anatomy and wasn't doing too well in simulation class so the school began the process of review for dismissal. Eventually the person got a second chance and did better, but only 1 more negative vote on the review board and after just 6 months, the guy would've been out...so again, at least you're still in the running for that degree.

That's right yo. We just show 'em the door...don't let it hit you on the way out. We are "in your face" NYC dental students...it doesn't get much harder than that.

How do you fail both part I & part II? Were you sleeping while taking your exams? it's difficult to get above 90, but to fail both is equally difficult in my opinion. Sorry to rub it in, but I think your school is doing you a favor by teaching you an extra year. Other schools would have kicked you out a long time ago.
How are you gonna pass your board exam? NERB or WREB? Or do you think you would get into a 1yr GPR in NY or CA to get your license without taking the exam?

So if you don't pass your part 1 boards they suspend you for 6 months? How does that process work?

what are the circumstances leading to you failing so many exams??? Do you just not study or what? No offense intended, but it sounds like you are quite fortunate to still be in school.

Honestly, people like you are public hazards and should really re-evaluate your choice of careers, even if you do end up getting a license. I mean, to fail both parts of the boards and a bunch of other courses is inexcusable. I know of one guy at the medical school affiliated with my dental undergrad that took 7 years to get through the first 3 years of med school, played the "you can't kick me out of med school, I've been through so much" thing with all the right ppl on his side. sucks...he's gonna be a PCP one day. Would you like him treating you or a loved one? Same here... the whole do onto others bit. I concur with the other posters and resonate even louder the reply-instead of whining thank everything holy you can think of that they even consider you fit to treat ppl.

How ridiculous are you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol, sorry I had to match the OP drama-meter

NYU doesn't play around, after first year they DO KICK out many people to make room for the foreign dentists (D2) all that rumor stuff is true, people drop out like flies. You my friend would have been kicked out freshman year first semester which would probably have been easier for u. By them doing that you would probably have went into podiatry or something else instead of being a miserable dentist.

This isn't true. I've spoken with student affairs and D2s an everyone has said that this isn't the case. D2s would know, and be vocal, if "people dropped out [of their class] like flies" to make room for the international students. Besides, we know how it works now, there is no mystery. Pass all your classes and you have nothing to worry about. There is no curve so how would the professors manage to fulfill their quota of students they have to fail in order to make room? How would so many people be complicit in such an unethical practice? Your telling me very ethical people like Jeff Bengert, who would obviously know about such a practice if it were happening, are just turning a blind eye, smiling and asking us if we have any concerns or if there is anything they can do to make things easier, all the while making plans to cut otherwise passing students to make room for the international students? Doesn't sound plausible my friend.

So, why would you want to continue this false rumor? I understand things are stressful and perhaps you have an axe to grind here, but keep in mind that our curriculum is front loaded; we are taking care of everything now to open up more time in the clinical years when things really matter. Hang in there and good luck.

Not trying to diss your school. It has great facilities and provides for an awesome clinical experience all the while having the opportunity to live in Manhattan for 4 years. All I'm saying is that if you fail that many classes in addition to failing both boards, then you would be dropped at NYU. Essentially, I just wanted the OP to know that other (most) schools don't have time to play games and that he/she should feel grateful.

aahhh. that is true. they would have been booted, most likely.

I wish u the best of luck. Be thankful that you got into dental school and that u still are becuase there are so many ppl who are more than capable than me or u and they want to be dentists more than us and they still end up not getting in. By the way, how is your performance in the clinic, if u dont mind me asking?

Seriously, grow up dude.

I meant just what I said, you are 100% right. If someone had that record at NYU they would have been dropped. The OPs school has been very lenient up until now.

Yeah, my bad.

To the OP:

You've been knocked around pretty hard because we all work our tails off for what we have achieved. At each of our schools, we would likely have been dismissed by now. I really do wish you the best of luck in finishing your degree, but you aren't going to get a lot of sympathy from dental students because, to be honest, your record doesn't display a lot of competence. You should be thankful you are still allowed to continue your education and you should work your butt off to finish that degree and prove to your school that you CAN do the work and should be a dentist. Again, good luck and I hope it works out for you.

I agree with jaiceman...I wouldn't want you (dentalhottie) to be one of my health care providers. Sorry....but it's true.

Now that everyone has bashed dentalhottie, I'm going to try and score some points here...who knows, maybe she is an actual dental hottie??? :meanie:

Maybe there are some underlying circumstances that this person isn't telling us. But before I continue, let me give this disclaimer:

I am not going to lie, dental hottie, i probably wouldn't want you to be my dentists after everything you posted.

That doesn't mean that your going to be a bad dentist, because you can always improve. Try to look at your situation as others in this post have and consider yourself lucky. Look at this year as an oppurnity to improve and hone your skills. I am not going to say your horrible because I think you, like everyone else who got into dental school, have a ligitimate chance at being a good dentists. The past is past, don't worry about it, just start kicking ass.😀

BTW, before I start getting some hate mail, let me just clear this up. I am not really trying to score points, just trying to give some encouragement.

To all those who bashed me,
You all seem to think I half assed my tests, and coasted throughout my four years of dental school. To the contrary, I studied more than I could. Much more than my cheating classmates and there was not more I could have done. Some ppl, can understand the material and perform poorly on tests. This was my case. I always managed to pass on the second try. Does that mean n/c I can't take a freaking test, that I wil be a bad tdentist?? no, I don't think so. instead of cheating like my classmates, I actually studied. So, maybe you should all be knocking them. And oh yeah, someone asked how my clinical skills were?? Well, I was the top of my class with that and my patients loved me. So, maybe you should all be careful in what you are saying. Someone who studies and studies but is the lowest of their class might be a better dentist than the one who was at the top of heir class and cheated all the way through. So, you sjould all shut up. Oh, and by the way, whenI wrote that post I had not recieved my test grade test on my lastand final class. Surprise surprise I passed with an 84 and have subsequently graduated. So instead of knocking a student down b/c she tries hard, you should all look at your disgusting selves.

oh and by the way arash, I am hot!

Do you look at the NDBE statistics? If you failed with 74, what percentage are you in compare to the population of all test takers?
I don't mean to criticize, but very rare to find a person who fails both Part I & Part II. I know international students who graduated more than 10 yrs ago and they studied for 3 months, and still pass those part I & II in the high 80s. Their english skills is nothing compare to yours. I don't think you should blame everything on test taking skill but take a closer look at the original problem (why you don't do well on tests?)

If plagiarism is such a problem at your school, have you ever reported to instructors and administration? But does it matter unless all classes are graded on a curve?

Tinker bell,
Take a look at the nbde threads...plenty of ppl fail..ppl failed in my school. In terms of test taking, one of the reasons why I perform poorly on tests is due to a learning disability. Not b/c I don't know the studd. As far as cheating in my class, it was reported numerous times to the administration and they looked away and are too afraid to do anything b/c of fear of lawsuits. So tell me what's fair here? sorry, but all y ou dental students should be providing encouragement instead of bashing me. no offense, but all those of you who are passing tests easily in dental school, it doesn't mean you will be making the big bucks................

As far as these international students go...take alook at the their study skills...all they do is study all day and all night for the boards unlike a regular dental student who has to worry about clinc and test. If I had there schedule to study Iw ould also pass easily...

if you have learning disability, did the school give you extra time for your exams and offer helps for you? You could also get extended time while taking the NDBE 1 & 2 due to disability. There are a few people in my class who got learning disability and they all managed to do well. They don't have extra time at regular exam or anything. However, I know that they do not retake every exam, and trust me, exams at UCSF are not easy. I know these guys, with learning disability and english is not even their mother language. They still manage to pass all the boards first try and graduated on time.
I do not know if they get extra time for their boards or not. Regardless, I know for a fact they pass above 90, and they are regular dental students, not international students.

Nobody is trying to bash you hard here. They just tell you how nice your school has been to you. Honestly, do you think you would still in school or graduated if you have gone to NYU or UCSF?

i don't know about ucsf, I'm not familiar with that school, but I do know nyu is a hell of a lot easier about my school and don't go off telling me that I don't know what i'm talking about since the deans of my school say that we are 100 times harder than nyu.

In terms of getting extra time, no I never did. My school frowns upon students with disbailuties and if u tell t hem they treat you very differentl y than other students.

You can't bash someone until you are in their shoes....... so Iw ould stop if I were u.

Whoa...I do believe it was you who started this thread, asking for help. The help came in the form of advice to be grateful you're still in dental school. What were you expecting? Sympathy?

First of all. Congratulations! You graduated so it doesn't matter what anyone on here thinks.

I hate to add fuel to the fire because I know you are already feeling picked on. I am sorry about your learning disability, but there is a point where we simply can't accomodate certain disabilities. This is especially true of the healthcare professions.

When I am bleeding like crazy and my O2 sats are dropping during difficult oral surgery I don't want my dentist to have to go take an extra half hour to figure out what he needs to do. I don't care if doesn't work well under pressure or has a "learning disability" or whatever excuse he has. I want him to fix me NOW.

I am not one of those people who thinks "learning disability" is just a politically correct way to say stupid. But at some point you just have to realize that it is not reasonable to acommodate everybody's little hangups.

If I told my patients I will probably screw up the first time we do this procedure, but there is a really good chance I will get it close enough the second time... well... I'm going to be flipping burgers very soon. And unfortunately there are a lot of things in dentistry where you don't get a second chance. Miss something important on the med history, screw up a prescription, botch a sedation -- these are things that you sometimes don't get a second chance on.

I'm sure if they let you graduate they have deemed you fit to practice. Congratulations again on that. Feels great doesn't it. 😀 Just trying to help you see where other people are coming from.

Congratulations on persevering and graduating. May you develop and grow professionally and find satisfaction in your chosen field. And, when the alumni association makes that annual call for contributions you know where to tell them to go.

Wow! Did you expect us to just rollover and pat you on the back while bashing your dental school? You are the one that posted, so we are not going to just "shut up" but instead give you our honest opinion (no matter how "disgusting" you think we are). I commend you for not cheating and for working hard, but to fail numerous classes in addition to both boards is quite alarming. Stop worrying about others and worry about yourself. Stuff happens, get over it! Like I said, you should be kissing the ground that your dental committee walks on as almost all the other dental schools would have dropped you in a heartbeat. Moreover, with that type of attitude you aren't going to get much sympathy here.

This thread justs gets better and better...you talk and behave like a child. Your school is 100 times harder than NYU, because your dean said so...you are the only noble student who actually studied instead of cheating and only cheaters prosper at your school...you know the material really well even though you fail exams...Its all moot now though, congratulations on your graduation, good luck out in the real world.

Congrats. Hopefully your patients (knock on wood) will be as lenient if you fail on them. Good luck in the real world hottie.

well said

If u r as hot as u say, I dont think the past failures matter. Patients will forgive u if u make mistakes. Just kidding. Look, u mentioned earlier that in clinic you where pimpin. If u keep that up, you will probably do very well in the "real world." No patient is ganna ask you to draw your amino acids or expain the TCA cycle and you can forget all the gprotiens too. If u see a lump of bump, just biopsy it, take a few guesses, call them "differentional dx'es" and send them to an oral path and let them figure it out. you will do fine, but seriously, SDN isnt always a good place to seek sympathy and neither is the "real world"

best of luck

ha ha..thanks rambo for your message...but oral pathology was my best subject in dental school... I got an A in that class...so I don't think I will have to be guessing at the differentials 🙂

how old are you, seriously?

i can't help but agree with the majority of the ppl here
you say your school is unfair to you but it is YOU who failed "many tests" as you say in addition to both parts of your nbde
you blame other ppl for cheating but it's kind of hard to believe that everyone in your class (except you, of course) cheats on tests and thats why they are all passing with flying colors.
if you really study as much as you say you do, you wouldn't be failing "many" tests, even with your learning problem. one or two would be understandable but "many"?! AND your part 1&2? c'mon, be realistic.

but like that is not enough, you come here telling your school is unfair and count on us to take your side and blame your school.. and when we don't take your side, you diss us saying we're not better than you and that we should shut up.. well, NEWS FLASH TO YOU.
1. don't post if you can't accept the reality or the brutality of the replies
2. yes, we're all cheaters... that's how we are all where we are
3. we are all looking at our "disgusting selves" and uh.. we can't seem to find anything wrong!

you pretty much suck at life. Good job, you are hot and you were able to get a 2.8 gpa and a 16 Dat 4.5 years ago. Nowadays you wouldn't even be allowed near a dental school's front door. Plus..if you are hot, and a woman, you got 2 other reasons you were let into dental school

you are not smart

you are a bad dentist

your patients like you because your hot and they dont know any better

lots of people don't fail ANY classes in Dental school

your school let you become a dentist because you whined and bit%^ed your way through school....isn't that cheating too.

you should have gotten the hint a long time ago and just quit, because now that you've graduated, you dont get any more remediation. you get lawsuits. I would get A LOT of insurance....

how many times did you poke the needle through the patients cheek or cement the pts jaws together instead of using alginate?

now stop posting you dumb ace. you are making everyone here more stupid.
