How should I withdraw an application?

Now that I have a good amount of interviews I am going to cancel a few.

Do I have to write the school or just call and cancel my interview. Obviously I prefer the latter, but I don't want to commit some big faux pax.

I'd just call them and tell them "Thanks, but no thanks".
