So how does it exactly work...

1. After being accepted to a residency program to whatever specialty you want to pursue, do you actually go to a school for another 2-4 years, or is it just residency for those remaining years

2. Also, is the residency paid?

3. How much money is it usually to attend these "specialty" schools?

4. Do dentists usually work while going to specialty school or residencies?

Residency is an additional 2-6 years after dental school. Typically they are 2-3 years.

Many residencies are paid, but others charge tuition. If they are paid, it is anywhere from $24k-$55k/yr. If they charge tuition, it alone can range from $10k-60k/yr, plus living expenses.

It used to be the case that most people in specialties would do this (a.k.a. moonlight), but currently less and less specialty programs are allowing it. If you find one that does, it can negate tuition charges.
