How successful are 3rd time apps?

I applied last cycle, but have decided to sit out this cycle to improve my app. If I don't get in on my second try I'm going to try for a third time. In a thread, I read a post by samenewme who brought up a point about how you get a second chance, but not a third. Do adcoms look down on applying for the 3rd time even if you've been able to make significant changes with each app or do you still have a decent shot at the school?

A lot of schools discourage people from applying a third time regardless of application improvements, because you should wait to apply a second time until you're sure you've done what you can to make your application better.

Apply to DO schools and caribbean schools your third time. Don't be foolish to think you can get into an MD school in the US if you failed 2 times before already.

Be careful applying DO on the third try. If they find out that it is your backup you are likely to be rejected.

how about you just apply for the second time!! you are already jumping the gun and assuming that you won't get in on the second attempt. I have heard of tooo many applicants applying the fourth time and getting accepted so why would you think a third try is crazy? I mean no one can say for sure that you won't get accepted on the third attempt, so I think you should just try, wait, and see! if you are going to wait this season out for sure, then you need to make sure that everything is up to par so you have no road blocks on your part! 👍 good luck on your decision!!

Wow, your thinking too far ahead. Just do all you can to improve your application for the second time. Then apply to DO and Carribean schools in addition to MD

I have been accepted to COMP as a third year applicant (first year applying to DO schools), so I say go for it. If medicine is what you really want, there's no reason not to keep trying. I did choose DO for my third year applications, and did tell my interviewers that I was interviewing at both MD and DO schools (as well as the fact that I had been rejected twice before at MD schools). They will ask that question, and if you're honest about it, they'll respect that. Just be sure you know what a DO is and the Osteopathic philosophy if you choose to apply to DO schools.

I guess part of my point is, check with the schools that interest you to see if they do accept 3rd time applicants before you waste time and money sending applications to them. Many (I know "many" is a fuzzy figure; I'm only basing this on a presentation I saw at an Old Premeds conference) schools just will not look at 3rd-time applicants. So, are you just completing your second application cycle, or your first?

Yeah, I'm thinking pretty far ahead, but I was just getting worried about my second chance being my last as far as allo schools go. I was actually going to take my second chance this cycle because last cycle I applied really late (at the deadlines), but decided I should wait another year. Thanks for all the input. I will look into applying DO.

You really need to find out why you didn't get in and how you can make your application stronger next year. Do the schools you applied to offer any kind of "rejected applicant seminar" that tells you what to work on? Some schools do.

I know someone who didn't get in until her 3rd time. She had MCAT problems and took it 4 times. She is now about to graduate and is AOA!!!

I applied to the UC's and a few out of state schools and only UC Davis was willing to talk to me very briefly. They told me my GPA (3.3) was a prob and they didn't think I had enough clinical experience. I'm hoping that if I work on these things and improve significantly, I'll do better on my next cycle, but with this crazy process you never know what'll happen. Congrats to your friend! Stories like that give me hope! 😀
