How this class would be listed on AMCAS

Just for my own neuroticism (I'm not applying until next cycle) I'd like to know if anyone else had this issue with a grey area class. I took a course called Cognitive Neuroscience, but it is listed with a PSYC tag. Really wish I had taken it before my school switched from purely number tags to abbreviated department tags, but oh well. I'm hoping since at other schools this is cross-listed usually under the Bio or Neuro department that it would be accepted under my science GPA through AMCAS. And considering the word SCIENCE is in the title. It was definitely a science class, considered the hardest psych class in the department, should really be in neuro.

Of course I'm going to put it there anyway, just wondering if anyone else has had this same issue and what happened.

Put it down as any station you want. AMCAS goes through and looks at your official transcripts and edits it.

However it looks on your transcript is how you should enter it on AMCAS.

I know. Just wondering if anyone has had a personal experience, so I can have my precalculated sGPA as accurate as possible for myself right now.

Put in as Biology if you want it included in your sGPA. People always forget it's based on the content of the class, not the department heading.

As always, worst that can happen is they change it to psych. Then you can easily refute (if you choose) and send them a class description if you think it will change their mind.

I took a Cog Neuro class using the following book and would not consider it BCPM at all, but AMCAS may let it fly if you classify it that way. The worst that can happen is they reclassify it as non-science.

Yeah, I mean we talked about neuro anatomy too, but then moved into fMRI and crazy experiments that IMHO would not pass the scientific method and case studies. It all seemed like magical waving of hands to me... Lets just say my prof didn't like my questions in class lol

But yeah, classify it how you want and see what happens. I probably would not waste the time refuting though as it would probably hold up your application.

Lol honestly I felt the same way when I first dove into all that stuff, but I actually ended up really liking fMRI studies and all that. I realized I thought it was all pretty pictures and spike charts only because I didn't understand them.

I may have the answer to your question. Since the title has the word "neuroscience", then you should list it as BCPM/science GPA.

I at one time had an Animal Physiology course that was under the Animal Science department. When I applied through the AMCAS a few years back, I listed it as a non-science because it was "animal science." After AMCAS did the grade calculations, I found out that my Animal Physiology counted as BCPM/science. The only reason I could think of was the "Physiology" in the title. So I say put it under biological sciences or neuroscience (I forgot the listing sorry) because it is in the title.

I put down three psych classes that counted toward my science gpa (biopsych, experimental research class, and a nutrition class)

List it as science and let AMCAS decide.

And I put biopsyc as non-science so clearly AMCAS doesn't care when it comes to the 'iffy' psyc classes. They'll likely leave it as whatever you put it. -I did it this way to raise my non-science GPA as my science GPA is higher than my non-science.
