I am right around top 10-20 stat wise, but I really am not all that interested in a mandatory thesis. I do like research, and want to get into it, but if I am struggling with the schooling, I don't want to be forced into research on top of that.

So I am kind of curious, how do medical schools that require a thesis handle the whole med student research thing, and how time consuming is it?

People tend to do big chunks of it in summers, and a lot of the time you can meet the requirements with a small retro chart review project. If you are interested in an academic career you'll want to do research in med school anyways to be competitive for residencies

Most med schools that require a thesis allow that thesis to be fulfilled in a variety of ways and academic disciplines. In other words, if you don't like bench research, you have other options. People do global health research, public health research, community projects, clinical research where they basically just review the statistics and draw conclusions from that, etc. If you do bench research, that will obviously require a good time commitment, as biology doesn't operate according to your schedule. But if you're mining the data and analyzing that, you can operate at your own pace as long as you get it done.

Thanks for the insight, I definitely thought that it had to be bench research.
