I just finished applying to medical schools and I was not happy with the fact that I was limited to what schools I realistically had a chance at because of my stats. Needless to say, I do not want the same problem when I apply for residencies. As someone who may enter medical school this year or the next, does anyone have any advice to make myself the most competitive applicant for psychiatry residency programs. Ideally I would want a top program in NYC.

First of all, congrats on getting into medical school! IMHO, you should first focus on your studies and try to enjoy the experience of learning without worrying about residency. There is enough stress in medical school without trying to add another worry on. With that said, besides the obvious of just doing well in your courses and scoring well on Step I and II, try getting involved in psychiatry research between your 1st and 2nd year. An excellent resource is to speak with psychiatrists at your school and find out what's going on and how you can get involved. Another resource is to join the American Psychiatric Association for Medical Students. Their website is http://www.psych.org .

If research is not your thing, then try getting involved in a local mental health center and volunteer your time. You can also get involved in your school's student psychiatry group and apply to be the president in 3rd or 4th year. The most important thing is to demonstrate a clear interest in psychiatry on your application. Good luck!
