how to become a mod?

I have heard rumors of a dark ritual but this is unconfirmed . . .
 
I think you have to be around for a while, and one of the other mods die. Like the supreme court.

SDN Mods > Skull and Bones > Illuminati > Masons 🙂, so yeah its a tough process.

Honestly though, if you are helpful enough, and someone notices you, and there is an opening, and a mod/smod/admin recommends you, then you will get a PM. It kind of happened out of the blue for me, and I think that generally that is how it happens. But I'm not expert, so hopefully one of the Grand Masters (admins/smods) will chime in.

You can speed up the process if one of the current mods has an, um, accident. 😀

All joking aside, what DoctaJay said is pretty much the deal. Regular users who are especially helpful and active on the forums are nominated to fill empty positions. Generally you would start as an assistant mod, then become a full mod, then an smod as you get more experience.
 
To go from smod--> admin I hear you have to spill your blood in the full moonlight when 5 planets align. Which planets those are is still disputable.

If you are interested in modding, you can PM anyone of the red mods or blue mods. Usually we like to see a user posting helpful information and be a member for say 6 mns so we have a history to evaluate.
 
Hm... Assistant Mod, Mod, SMod, Admin... so becoming an admin or smod is like getting tenure?

i did this, but it turns out that pluto isn't a planet or something. what a waste of perfectly good blood...

i've always had a secret desire to become a mod. not so secret any more. 😀
 
I heard a rumor that you had to send some current mods nudes of yourself. It was just a rumor though...

it was embarrassing.
 
If you're interested in being a moderator, then whether you will be one or not will depend on your posting history and time on the boards. Most moderators spent 6 months to a year on SDN before becoming a moderator and are usually nominated by a moderator who notices their helpfulness and high activity.

As for what are some of the benefits of being a moderator. There are some obvious ones, being able to ban knuckleheads :laugh: and doing fun things like post april fool's announcements, plus the actual work of managing a forum.

Really the best part is working on such a great team. Some of the contacts and relationships I have established here at SDN I hope to maintain for years.

Also, I put SDN on my AMCAS application and many other staff have it in their CVs/resumes. It is an interesting conversation piece at any meeting or interview and can possibly help you stand out in the crowd.

Probably the most important thing you would need is patience. I've only been here 6 months and the number of times I've seen the same question asked is staggering (same with "Use the search function!" posts). Resist the urge to lash!

In all honesty:
just post, be helpful, dont do anything that violates TOS, dont be rude to others who are new and don't know the ropes of the forums yet.

as for the utility of becoming a mod. You get involved in interesting opportunities like Test Prep week and meet really interesting people. I talk with DP on a consistent basis now, Ive met some physicians, I met other students who were interviewing, Ive even been recognized on the interview trail by some people. Networking is great because now I can stay at any of my fellow moderator's homes if I choose to visit (RIGHT?!) You get to work on maintaining a forum, learn quite a bit about internet technology, and all the while you get to stay current on issues that pertain to your interests because you're constantly reading the forums to maintain it. Its also a "get my number free card" at any bar if you mention that you work as an SDN mod. You have no idea how hot you can get others to become by talking about it 😉

They should keep it, and then classify the other 17 Pluto+ sized objects orbiting Sol. I learned "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" to remember the planets, so I'd like to see grade schoolers having to learn a 26-part mnemonic. 😀
