Hey all,
I’m trying to do a pharmacy test question and it says WBC 7.2 and neutrophils 4.3 and it’s asking what is the ANC?

I know ANC is ((segs+bands)/100)*WBC
But I didn’t know how to calculate the ANC with just those 2 numbers.

Thanks!

Uhhh isn’t it 4.3? Obviously I am missing something lol

But ANC does mean absolute neutrophil count, right? So if they give you the neutrophils isn’t that it?

I honestly don’t know! That’s why I’m asking hahaha but it could be that easy and IM the one missing something haha

You might be close to dead with an ANC of 4.3 (and it's actually impossible to have a part of a neutrophil)...so make sure you get your units and decimals right...Also is it number or percent neutrophils being 4.3? Poorly worded question...

What’s the point of learning how to calculate ANC when
1. You can google it
2. There are no jobs?

I thought neutrophils were recorded scientifically. As in, 4.3 x 10 to the x or something per micro liter. I'm probably wrong though, lol.

That’s all the question gave me. No units, nothing else. I assume the question means 7200 and 4300 (x 10^3 cells/microliter).

Seems like the question is missing the bands.

Nope you're right, x10^3...just saying, that that means ANC couldn't be 4.3 because of that.

Given this is a test question, then this is likely the % neutrophil count that is present in a CBC w/diff. The ANC would be 0.43(7.2) = 3.1 cells/mm3, which is wnL.

In practice, ANC is usually included in the differential or an orderable that lab will do for you.

I recommend you look into what segs and bands actually are, that should clear things up.
