how to change programs

I posted in the G surg forum my reasons for considering changing programs. I haven't made any decisions yet, but every day it is on my mind more and more.

My question here is, if I decide to look for a PGY 2 slot for next year, how do I go about finding open slots? Obviously there won't be any open right now, but I'm sure people will drop out as the year wears on. Is there some data base for open slots? Or do I just make phone calls?

Any help would be appreciated!

I had asked this same question and nobody wrote back...............so if someone has info on how to change residency spots please write in. How do you find PGY2 spots available?

Have you checked with the Association of Program Directors in Surgery. There is a list of available positions and a place for residents that are looking for spots to post their credentials.

Other specialities have this as well...I know I've seen a similar list for internal medicine. Good luck...

Would you consider going back to where you completed medical school? Especially since they know you and you know the system, maybe you wouldn't lose any time. At my program, an extra spot was created for a guy who wanted to transfer in (though he did have to start over as an intern.)
