Hey All,

Just had a question regarding declining admissions to colleges of optometry. I've pretty much made up my mind as to where I'd like to go, but as other acceptances from schools are coming in, I'm wondering whether or not it's typical for students to write letters or send emails to the schools they won't be going to, just to be polite?

And if so, how do you go about phrasing something like that? I like every school I applied to, so I'd find it difficult (and somewhat mean) to e-mail a school saying I won't be going there.... 🙁

Help!!

Thanks in advance! =D

Email is probably fine. Some schools require a letter with your signature. Don't feel too bad about declining a seat; the schools realize that most students apply to more than one school. Just thank them for the offer. You can tell them where you're going, but it's not necessary. Keep in mind that for every seat you decline, someone else who really WANTS to be at that school gets a seat.

Good advice.

I'm sure they'd figure out, eventually, you're not accepting the seat, but it seems like good courtesy to inform the school, yourself. I think it would be a bit much for a college to require a signed statement to this effect, and, if one does, you might go ahead and forgo the kindness.

Some schools just need it in writing through e-mail, which is nice. Other schools (won't mention which one because it kinda took me by surprise and the email I got back from them was kind of curt. Whew!) require it in writing because they'd like to attach it to your file and officially close it.

I wouldn't just have the schools figure it out on their own because if you think about it, once you decline an offer, you are letting someone who really super duper wanted the spot have it. That should give you a nice feeling 🙂
