How to demonstrate a strong commitment/service to the underserved population

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your desire is reflected through your work, community service in underserved areas. What kind of volunteer? It can be any kind such as clinical activities (eg. Medical trip) , social activities, community service, etc.

Thanks.

I volunteer in a urban hospital. I also volunteer to teach students to learn science.
Can this count to serve undeserved??

Think free clinics, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc.

Good medical school candidates are expect to have volunteering in both medical and non-medical areas. For the former, an example would be working in a hospice. For the latter, reading to poor children at the Library.

Thanks. I have never heard of it. Good to know... Is it very medical related experience?

You could also demonstrate this with the physicians you shadow. If you are near rural areas try to shadow a doc there. Or contact a community health center to see if you can set something up. I think the above ideas are better for showing commitment to serve but the shadowing will show that you understand the unique benefits and challenges docs have when serving those populations.
