Hey all,

I'm beginning M1 this year in the south. While my wife and her family are from the south, and financially the best decision by far was to attend school here, I am originally from the mountain west and I have always wanted to settle and practice there, which ideally would mean doing residency at one of the institutions out there. Unfortunately, there's not that many.

I've heard that something that can help beyond just doing away rotations would be doing research out there. Is there anything I should plan on doing throughout M1 year to help me get a research position in the area? Are there any programs that would be more likely to take me? Any advice about this process would be great - I'm just trying to get my head wrapped around my goals before I start diving into studying when the semester starts.

What specialty are you interested in? Either way, the AAMC Clinical & Research Opportunities website is a good place to start, but I'm not sure how updated they would be now. Some schools also have their own summer research programs that they run, and I'm not sure if all of them show up on the AAMC website.

I'm going into medical school with a lot of interest in surgery, but I expect to do more shadowing in the first year to try and begin narrowing down.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you might only get 1 summer off during med school, usually the summer after MS-1.
You can try to get connected with research at your home institution and try to get away rotations in the west in late MS-3 early MS-4
