Hey everyone. I know this might seem like a silly question to some but what is an effective way to prepare for the Step 1 throughout your first two years? I am not concerned about doing hardcore studying for the exam during the first two years but I want to be able to retain the information effectively so I have to do less intensive review when it does come time for studying for Step 1. I am a massive crammer so I don't really retain information once it's been a week or so since I've taken an exam. I want to change that however. I am hoping that I can retain most of the things during the pre-clinical years and get used to the format of the exam so that I won't have to rush to re-learn a lot of information when Step 1 comes around.
I've heard that keeping First Aid in a binder and using that to study for your pre-clinical courses by writing notes for topics that are covered extensively in lecture is a good idea. I am wondering if anyone has done anything similar. Also, I have heard that doing Pre-Test questions to prepare for your class exams is a good idea as well. And some people even recommended using the Kaplan Qbank or USMLE World questions to study for your class exams but that seems like it's going too far. However I'm still not completely sure on how to approach retaining knowledge and preparing for the exam's format on a long term basis. Are there any specific techniques or books people recommend that you can use throughout your pre-clinical years so you are able to retain most of the important knowledge once Step 1 comes around?
