I am interested in a general ophthalmology job in a specific geographic area. How do I go about looking for jobs? I have contacted every ophthalmologist I know in the area and haven't come up with anything. Also when should I start looking? I am currently pgy3.

1) Start looking now (i.e. as early as possible).

2) Keep pestering all of the eye doctors in the area occasionally. If you are in a super-competitive area, good luck. Also, consider Kaiser, the VA, academic places, etc. If you are up for the challenge, start learning how to start up your own practice. You'd be surprised on how quickly you could become profitable.

That is the way to do it if you are locked into a specific area. Get your name out there with the practices in the area.

I would also considering have a Plan B. I see folks who work for a few years elsewhere while keeping their eyes on the prize. An opportunity may not come up for a few years in a specific location and you must be ready to strike when they do.

The AAO website has a section with job listings. It kind of sucks now. It used to be free for practices to place an ad, so there used to be a TON of listings. Now the AAO outsourced it to a third party as I understand it, and they charge practices to post there. So the number of listings is about 1/3 of what I remember it. Still a decent resource, but used to be a lot better.

I'll echo what others have said. Connections are key. That means between you and potential hiring docs, as well as between your residency program faculty and potential hiring docs. Where you trained is one thing, but docs want to work with folks they are comfortable with. Your presence in a practice reflects on the whole practice, not just your part of the practice. Contacting docs is different from getting to know them and them getting to know you.

What area are you looking in? My practice in Annapolis, MD is looking to expand and hire optometrist/ophthalmologists.
